Wonder if or when fender will start including the small mustang practice amps in these packages? These little amps are pretty terrible and dated compared to the modeling amps which makes learning way more fun.
Tones are fun and motivating. To play with the tones and not necessarily practice a song.
Usually; the only time these kits work out is if you find a truly slick deal used FSBO and they are just throwing in the bad sounding practice-only amp. And it likely still cost you more for the guitar. Then you have to get rid of the crappy amp.
Where combinations work is in a good combo amp. Not a practice-only amp and not a stadium amp. <25lbs 15W (like 50W) tube combo (Monoprice $200 when sale due Jan) or a more prone to obsolesce digital combo (Katana 100 mk2 33lbs) is fine at half-price, used if the weight is OK for you. You don't have to own 5 of everything. Until you get paid you don't really even need a backup. Have a plan and this is how you keep it under control.
Research first. Look at the $40 Cube Baby multi effects, amp and cabs pre-amp pedal. Does almost all pedals for a lot less. No power or tiny jumper cables. Adds USB to tube amps. Works as pre-amp tones for practice, like with headphones. No boxy sounding practice-only amp/speaker toy needed.
Beware the player with one combo.
