Currently, I have a 'bent' (OG owner sat on it; I call it my Banana Phone) T-mo Firmware'd OnePlus 7T on Mint. However, I'm too scared to try and 'convert it' to the international firmware. Doing so would allow me to load an alternate Android ROM.
(I watch the smartphone deals primarily to 'replace' my current phone, so that I can re-flash it w/o risking losing my only serviceable smartphone.)
Otherwise, and for most-everybody else, you are very correct: A little more $ gets you a lot more phone, and a 'better' phone as far as hardware, and software support into the future.
