If you have a 4k tv and stream 4k content, yes. If you use HomeKit and thread enabled devices, yes. If neither, not really unless you want a new remote as well as just a newer device.

Picked this up over the last holiday season. Think I paid about $130 then.
Love the new layout of the remote but the pass thru for powering everything on/off is less than stellar when connected directly to a receiver.
Apple pointed their finger at Yamaha and vice versa. Found several forms with the same model of Apple TV and different brands/models of receivers with the same issue. Never had an issue with the last generation.
My solution was to connect the Apple TV directly to the TV and run the audio from there to the receiver and never a problem since. 🤦

Can you elaborate? I have a Yamaha receiver that I'd be hooking this into... Screen is a projector.

What does your bypassing the receiver resolve? Does the Cec protocol still work/ can you still control volume and interface with the the Apple TV user interface?

The only difference I have been able to find between this and previous gen for streaming is that this one supports hdr at 60fps vs 30fps. So if you love that soap opera look then I guess this is an upgrade but other than that the only noticable difference is the remote. The processor should be a little faster but you probably won't notice that.
If you use Apple Fitness+ it's worth it. My older Apple TVs could not stream workout data from watch (hardware not powerful enough), had to turn it off or would crash. Upgraded and now works perfectly. Can find similar experiences from other people online.

Upon turning the Apple TV on, some of the buttons on the remote would work ( I.e. up down. Left right) others would not ( all others) for about 10 mins or unless you hard rebooted the Apple TV.
Behavior occured once every few days of use.
They sent me a new remote but the only way I can avoid this behavior is hooking up the device directly to the TV.

Yes... Only downside to this setup is having to switch multiple inputs (tv and receiver) when I want to watch a blu-ray or etc. Pass through for volume controls still work.
Remote would half work (directional keys would work but other buttons like play, home, etc would not work unless you wait it out or hard rebooted the device.
Did not experience this behavior even time I used it but probably a few times a week.

I've used both the Nvidia Shield and this Apple TV 4K. I have to say I prefer the Shield, even as a Apple ecosystem user. The Nvidia shield puts out way more saturated color if that is your taste. It certainly isn't accurate (not even close, and I understand that), but a side-by-side comparison on the same TV produces this "milk filter" as I call it on the Apple TV, because it's using the correct color space whereas the Shield uses another which causes the colors to be way more saturated than they should be. The Apple one was noticeably brighter as well.
This was on an LG CX OLED using Plex The interface on the Apple was much snappier, and there were zero ads. I would have strongly preferred the Apple TV but there just wasn't a way to adjust the colors for them to be inaccurate and overly saturated as I'm used to watching content as.
Many people will prefer the Apple TV, and it's still a solid pick and almost $90 less than the shield. It really comes down to personal taste and if you prefer color saturation or accuracy (The Shield has the ability to change its color space as well to mimic the look of the Apple TV as well if you prefer it to be accurate, whereas the Apple TV can only output it accurately).
