no open box is a good sign - it means people are not returning them in droves

That's where I'm at. Looking at this price point for Xmas present for the kid. So I feel like it makes sense to wait… argh never know.

Pretty good price I think. I'm pretty sure it's the 3050 (non ti) and not a 3060 that keep people away.

These are really good specs for $600. Supply chain crisis is passing. I'd be surprised if they dropped the price further - doesn't seem like there's any wiggle room left for a deeper discount.

Also I'm also mildly surprised there's no open box inventory (at lower prices). So I suppose you could wait a month or two, hope they bring back the $599 price, then see if they have any returns that you can buy as open box for another $50-100 off.

This deal or

Dell - G15 15.6" FHD Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Graphics - 512GB Solid State Drive ($650 open box Excellent at bestbuy)

Or ASUS - TUF Gaming A15 15.6" FHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop-AMD Ryzen 7-8GB DDR5 Memory-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti-512GB PCIe SSD
$800 excellent condition

Thoughts? It's for a 13 year olds birthday, first gaming computer. I am very new to all of this and to me the specs look very similar. I appreciate any info!

ASUS has better build quality and longevity than Dell. Teens need a durable machine, and Dells are built to fall apart.

If you can spare the extra cash go for the 800$ Asus. 3050 Ti is a decent step up compared to 3050 and I strongly prefer Ryzen over Intel 11th gen (much more efficient = cooler and can last longer on battery and tiny bit faster). I would add 8GB of ram though, or better yet do it together with the kid. My only reservation is that black Friday might get you an rtx 3060 laptop for around 800-900$ which is again a pretty big step up. Overall 3050 is really entry level and depending on what kind of games he likes to play it will be playable but it will not be such a great experience. Anyway if 600$ is an absolute max you are unlikely to get better BF or not. If you are willing to spend a bit more I would wait, there are usually some crazy deals on this site.
