I got a Generac 22kW about 10 months ago, it cost me $6000 to buy and another 3000 to install plus another $200 for the gas company to come hook a tank.

I wouldn't buy another Generac, the fan on mine exploded on the 2nd prolong use and was such a hassle to get a dealer to come out and warranty and I still ended up having to pay $120 because the dealers weren't willing to do the repair for the generac reimbursement amount.

I'd probably go Kohler if I had to do it again.
Well it is not meant to be run for a month straight. If that is the case then shit has hit the proverbial fan.
I think this is one of those purchases where DIY is probably not the right term. There are issues of the warranty, installation, maintenance, and repair. Getting some estimates or professional advice on installation for your particular area and property seems to make the most sense. Even if you are unable to take advantage of the current deal, you will have a better idea about the real cost the next deal that comes around.
Another thought would be if there are any tax related benefits, and the added value of investing in one to increase your home value.

If your jurisdiction allows it.

Unless you're a electrician then no.

Yes if your jurisdiction allows it. Texas for example where I live, if your property is homestead'd you can pull your own permits to run a gas line and or do electrical. I've replaced my own load center panel twice (two different properties I have lived at), so I feel comfortable doing this. This isn't like swapping out an outlet or light fixture. So be careful there…

Its a natural gas line you'd be connecting to.

I'm interested but don't want to get screwed on labor charges which in TX can be as high as the parts cost...

The hardest part about this is adding in the automatic transfer switch which sits between the service meter and your main load center (it keeps the grid from frying your new generator and allows the generator to kick on automatically when the grid fails), and it gets more complicated if you have solar… after that it's setting up some sort of foundation for the generator in a spot that isn't too close to windows and doors, running a gas line to it (which optionally may also involve bumping you gas pressure on NG to 2 psi from 1, installing regulators to bring it back down for all your other gas appliances) and connecting all the electrical up. Because I live in San Antonio and the local power company also has certain restrictions it also means that I need to have my power meter moved which is a process in itself… if you are willing to put in the time to read the code and check with your permitting offices and your state allows you to do it, then go for it… Some other things to check are if your existing meter and service wires are 200amp and that your main load center (breaker box) is also 200 amp.

Anyone know the model number for the transfer switch? The Costco site has a poor description. Trying to figure out if it's Service Entrance rated.

Is this information I found in a quick google search correct?

How long will generac run on propane?
Typical home-use will burn through around 2 to 3 gallons of propane an hour. So a 1,000-gallon tank will see you through around two weeks of outages.

Propane near me is around $3 a gallon, that would be $6000 a month in fuel?

This can't be correct, can it?

That sounds about right if it were operated continuously at around 50% to 75% of its rated load. These generators are not efficient. This one will range from about 10% efficient at a 25% load up to about 22% efficient at full load.

lol 3 bucks

i paid over 4 bucks last fill up, it's been going up the past 2 years due to world loosing it's freaking mind.

anyways burn rate on that sounds about right 22kw is a big unit maybe around 2-3. Not best option for long outages or SHTF. good for cold area, medical conditions or if you can't live without big wattage central ac and heat, etc etc

just went through 3 days no power with hurricane ian didn't miss a beat, 6-8 hours a day on an inverter burned maybe 4 gallons. But you gotta be prepared for a very very long outage here for shtf as well as for flooding wind damage on outside stuff.

These are expensive to run, even on natural gas. Like any backup solution or insurance, you do the math based on the importance of electricity for you during a prolonged outage vs the up front costs, operating costs, and maintenance.

Most people run whole home generators on natural gas though which will be cheaper, but still a lot more than grid power.

But if you're in Texas and your grid goes down again in the middle of winter, it may be a reasonable cost. But in a functioning state like ours where we have had one short term outage of about two hours in the last couple years, it's harder to justify compared to maybe just a portable generator.
