I just moved into a new home and this is on my wish list but not sure I'm ready to do it now. I thought these were a lot more expensive to buy honestly. I'm sure they can go much higher depending on what you buy though.

Any thoughts on what it would cost to hire a professional to install this and what it would cost to maintain?

Here in Florida I was quoted $15,000 for everything. Too expensive though, went for a portable generator instead.

The crazy thing is the generator is only a small portion of the overall cost. Saving a few thousand is nothing to sneeze at, especially compared to buying it from an installation company. But when you factor in all of the permitting, electrical work, plumbing work on the gas lines, cost of a propane tank if you don't have one and don't have natural gas (plus burying it and filling it up), the concrete slab for the generator, etc. you're probably looking at $15-20k out the door.

Well it is not meant to be run for a month straight. If that is the case then shit has hit the proverbial fan.
I live off grid, I use solar when the sun cooperates and portable inverter generators the darkest winter months when it doesn't. Has nothing to do with prepping or SHTF and it's not Joe Bidens fault either. It would just be a nice convenience to have a permanently installed generator rather than having to shuffle portables around.

My portable inverter generators aren't designed to be used the way I use them either.

Unless you're a electrician then no.
You are 100% wrong. Varies from state to state but most places you can install anything in a non attached single family dwelling that is owner occupied

Can installation be a DIY project?
Yes, most places will allow you to do it in an owner occupied non attached dwelling. So a single family home with no shared walls owned and occupied by the owner can be installed with self pulled permits. Ask me how I know.

I got a Generac 22kW about 10 months ago, it cost me $6000 to buy and another 3000 to install plus another $200 for the gas company to come hook a tank.

I wouldn't buy another Generac, the fan on mine exploded on the 2nd prolong use and was such a hassle to get a dealer to come out and warranty and I still ended up having to pay $120 because the dealers weren't willing to do the repair for the generac reimbursement amount.

I'd probably go Kohler if I had to do it again.

I've been really wanting to get this but then we got the hurricane here in Florida and it's going to be a while until anybody can install it probably by next hurricane season. How much do you think the total cost with the electrician anyway anybody had it done.

If you can change a light bulb, you can install a generator
I would disagree with that statement. You need to have a basic knowledge of how to do electrical work to code as well as properly running gas line. I've met a lot of people who just don't have the ability to figure out how to do this stuff. I have to know basic electrical and plumbing for work, and I would need to do some research before I tried to tackle a auto switch install.

The power in my area in TN is very stable and rarely goes out, so I went with a WEN 7kw/8750kw inverter gen in a vented sound insulated shed I built backfeeding the main panel with a safety interlock on the main. I installed a Tri-fuel kit and have natural gas. I can run what I would need to if the power goes out. On gasoline using a MicroAir EasyStart I installed, I can even power my3 ton AC.

Is this information I found in a quick google search correct?

How long will generac run on propane?
Typical home-use will burn through around 2 to 3 gallons of propane an hour. So a 1,000-gallon tank will see you through around two weeks of outages.

Propane near me is around $3 a gallon, that would be $6000 a month in fuel?

This can't be correct, can it?
500 gallon tank is supposed to last me 7 days but I can't imagine my load would warrant full rate consumption at the generator.

Keep in mind you don't have 500 or 1,000 gallons of actual storage, it's really 400 or 800 respectively.

Where do you guys live where propane is so high? I just filled up for $2.05/gallon plus 1% tax.

Back to deal. This is tempting with the time of year when I'd really want it is during the summer. Winter electric demand is fairly low if you run a propane furnace and stove.

I have been using Tesla PW for over a year. very happy with that.

for this generator, you need proper maintenance which is going to cost you more over time.

Nice man, I think 22k is way overkill for all but the biggest homes.
