I'd rather buy the certified-refurbs from Sonos directly for a. Better pricing b. Same warranty as new

Next round of refurb sale is just round the corner. Hold, if you can .
I bought 2.5k worth last time and everything was in pristine condition with original retail packaging.
Also, the setup is incomplete without a SUB

You are comparing apples to oranges... Of course a dedicated 5.1 system with a receiver will blow any soundbar out of the water. Soundbar is for the convenience and simplicity, and Arc is among the best sounding stand alone soundbar, according to the reviews.

Reeeeeally didn't plan to spend $700 today. What are people's thoughts on this?? I feel like 20% off an Arc is a very rare find indeed, been hoping and waiting for something to make that one a good deal.

Had the Arc for 3 months, wasn't at all impressed with the sound for the price. I just returned it and bought a Hi-Fi system (used Oberon 5's) and am so happy I did. I would caution others from buying without listening to it first - it's not as impressive as the reviews make it out to be and doesn't hold a candle to similarly priced Hi-Fi setups.

Arc itself you might not get full sound effects
If you have woofer and surround speaker synced up with arc then it will blow you away
I have all 3 and love it

I don't have a 5.1 system, just two floorstanders that have performed far better than my Arc in every way. Yes the Arc is more convenient, you don't have to mess with buying a receiver and will probably take up less space, but $800 is a steep price to pay for convenience paired with good (not great) sound.

I really wanted to like the Arc, but I just couldn't no matter how much I listened to it. My new setup is everything I hoped my Arc would be sound-wise and isn't occupying that much more space (Oberon 5's are pretty small). Just trying to warn others before they make the same mistake I did.

Also beware the 5% SD cashback on eBay - I still haven't received my 5% credit from when I purchased in June. SD says they're still "waiting for eBay to confirm my purchase" for the past 3 months...

I understand a soundbar is easy to hook up, but for the money people are spending, buying a receiver and even some pretty crappy speakers has got to blow away any soundbar.

A lot of people don't have a console under their wall-mounted TV these days. That makes these much more aesthetic.

"Not great" sound is subjective. Sounds like you are only using the arc by itself. My playbar isn't the best by itself but when paired with the sub and rear stereo speakers it sounds amazing (just like another SD-er committed on). Sound is highly immersive.

The nice thing about sonos is the eco system. You can add a sub and/or pair the speakers down the road if you don't have the money or if new gens come out you can upgrade as you go. The best thing is a wireless hi-if system that doesn't require a receiver as you said, significantly less wires, no running of cables in the walls, and a cleaner look. You can also add more speakers to your home, ie. backyard, bathrooms, bedrooms and controlling them all from your phone. Also simple enough for a non tech savvy person to install.

I respect your opinion but you are only comparing the sound quality of a pair of floor standing towers to one sound bar. If that is all you want to compare then I would agree that the oberon 5 is better suited for you.

But I'm a bit underwhelmed wrt sound quality compared to my expectations and the speakers it was replacing (small old stereo speakers hooked up to a old cheap receiver) , most notably on the low end (bass). It needs a sub. The Sonos subs are way overpriced for what they are. You can hook up a real sub if you do a little YouTubing.
