That's a negative for Apple though. I think it is more unwillingness to deploy resources in the app group than any strategic reason. Because SMS based texts work (without chat features), they figure it isn't a pressing need for inter-operability.
It crushes your old iMac because your old iMac has a much slower SSD and so swapping becomes slow. There is no difference in memory allocated between M chips and Intel chips.
Wait until your M mac starts getting old and your SSD starts to get filled when it WILL slow down (like all SSDs) and you will be wondering what happened.
Yes, when an app asks for acertain amount of memory, the same memory gets allocated whether it is an Intel chip or a M chip. The M chip has a SSD on board, so when memory runs out and unused memory needs to be swapped out, it is much faster than a MB based SSD of earlier, so you don't notice the beachballs…. until the SSD starts to get filled and slows down like all SSDs do and the swapping becomes slower and more noticeable.
There is no magic bullet for memory allocation on M Macs. In fact, the effective available memory for apps is smaller for same total RAM because it is shared between Graphics and Neural Engine also.
Well let me ask you this serious question for your input then:
Is this a good MacBook Air for light used ie shopping, email, YouTube and web browsing?

AFAIK only one Mac (none with the new M-series chips) available new can have RAM upgrades. That would be the Mac Pro which starts at 6 grand.
The currrent M1 architecture has the CPU and GPU proper sitting a few mm away from the ram which is soldered on chips. They could design a way to make the RAM user-upgradeable, and may one day if they get the M series up to speed to replace the Intel-based Mac Pro, or maybe they'll either run out to SODIMM slots or come up with their own connector. For now, I don't think there has been anything released about it.
I got a MacBook pro 14 since then and have been very pleased with it.
But I am really attracted to this price for m1 air. Almost a 1000$ savings which I could invest or even buy an apple watch ultra
I am also testing a m1 air for few days. Let's see
