The 2012 iMac came with 8GB... and apple still thinks in 2022... 8GB is enough memory. This is called planned obsolesce.

But isn't the Air meant for light/average users? If you're routinely using more than five tabs, or doing more than email/light browsing/watching YouTube.. you shouldn't be using an Air, and should be looking MacBook Pro

Not quite. The M-series Macs use RAM away differently than intel Macs. It's not an apt comparison. 8GB of RAM is plenty for 90% of users.

You know, that's one of my biggest wins to date. I did the same - typing this post from the MacBook that I bought on that deal. Never saw it go below that price again, and it only lasted there for like a day or two. $770 at MicroCenter is the closest I've seen yet. I'm thrilled to have bought mine back then and enjoyed it for an entire year though.

I don't know, I'm sitting here on my Air with several apps open and 15 odd Chrome tabs, heavy content. No issues.
Maybe I'm just not as demanding on speed or coming from a PC world, this is a huge upgrade.

For what this device is meant to do, 8GB is enough. I went with the 16GB M1 MacBook Pro for the extra headroom bc I edit on that machine, but I have an 8GB Mac Mini that has never struggled to complete tasks I use it for.

As a software programmer myself, I would say it's fairly common to use a higher end machine for my coding work. It's like you've taken a Honda CR-V to the track and you're complaining that it doesn't corner well. The car is fine, for it's intended purpose. You should be using a machine built for pros.

The Air was introduced for portability alongside Macbook which was heavier and had a DVD drive. The air was not aimed at replacing consumer grade Macbook.. but that's exactly what apple has done.

Also, the base line macbook Pro comes with 8GB memory.. WTH.. It's a PRO .. 8GB memory is a slap in the face. And then they want 200 more for 8GB additional memory.
