Those toe line markers from Viper work very well once you set it up properly. I have the one that goes on top and also has two lights to illuminate the board, very nice.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a fairly priced backstop(?) so my kids don't perferate my sheetrock too badly

It's an excellent learning opportunity to get them to be better at darts. A kid feels OMG when they hit the wall, and there isn't an easier home repair out there.

I remember the dread I felt every time I missed when I was growing up, now I never miss the board!

But if you really want something that won't look hideous, you can easily find a cork board quite cheap. You want cork or wood so the missed dart will stick and not bounce out onto the floor. (And when you inevitably invest in better darts, it will be much better for them too.)

Yup. I bought a Winmau Blade 6 triple core board to go in my custom cabinet. I had a cheaper Unicorn that was actually pretty decent, so I didn't think the Blade would be all that much better. Man was I was wrong. It's so much better. This is a place to find deals though, and something like this is just for fun for most. I started out with the cheap stuff too, until I got a little more invested in it.
