Weight and compressed size.. synthetic is usually 0.5(kids)-2lb(long adult) heavier.
It's big difference for backpacker

In which state will your son do most of his camping? This will be warmer than what he has. Whether it's warm enough depends on how cold it will get. This should do well in 40deg Fahrenheit.
Good question. California, San Diego county. For instance, he goes to the deserts here and will be going to Grand Canyon in November and Alaska in March. But most here in the deserts, Borrego Springs, Warner Speings, Cuyamaca, etc.

I think Alaska will be cabins but Grand Canyon will be tents

Might not be warm enough for Alaska in March. Might ask the troop what temperature rating to shoot for.

In Alaska will be cabins, think that makes a difference? But I did hear they will be out at least one night. Should I buy and return if not what he needs. Seems like a great price.

It would probably do fine for most of his adventures. I just camped with my son's Cub Scout pack this last weekend in TX and my vintage down mummy bag was too hot for a low temp of 62F. So there are trade offs, like anything else. It won't work for summertime trips in CA, I would guess. 3-season, most likely.

Newbie here. My sons In The boys scouts and they asked him to upgrade his sleeping bad to something lighter and warmer. He just has a $30 one from Walmart that says 35 degree on it. It was 40 degrees this last camping and he said it was really cold. Would this help him, he is 11, around 5 ft tall.

Is the synthetic one washable. I bought the co op membership this past week when I bought his some clothes for his camping.
You can get the rei synthetic 25F + an electric hand warmer(~$25 last 10-15h) and it is really hot.
Also you need good sleeping pad which r-value over 4-5.

if you think he will stay w/ scouting for >1yr, then it's well worth the money to invest in better gear. You can wait for REI semi-annual sales to upgrade. It will make a huge difference and the overall experience much better for them.

Weird down only saves 4oz. I went with poly since it can take more abuse and will last longer.
Community consensus seems to be that synthetic bags are marginally easier to care for (though cleaning should be avoided) and better retain warmth if wet, but they lose their loft sooner and are heavier for the level of warmth they provide (particularly when compared to the higher loft down).

"Ratings are based on a person wearing one long underwear layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38."

I feel like that's a pretty serious pad needed for comfort sleeping at 35 degrees.
