Benchmade is well-respected and you do pay a bit for the name, but it earns that with excellent materials, service, technology, and workmanship (quality control being their main issue). IMO it's among the best (for the money) along with Boker, Emerson, and Zero Tolerance. The Griptilian line is well-established (released in 2001) and shines at almost everything. The Axis locks are superb and it's fast, light and smooth; and there's a lot of choice in materials for the blade and the scales.

With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

Kinda like saying if you're buying $200k cars you should learn take care of them yourself. You're not wrong, it's just not helpful and a bit out of touch.

Do you know how sales tax works for online sales?

In regards to Benchmade's sharpening: I've owned/gifted 14 Benchmades since 2012 and in my experience although they arrive very sharp, the blade angles of most of them have been inconsistent. I've seen inconsistencies in the angle on the same side from tip to choil and inconsistencies in the angle between both sides of the edge. Typically I'll see a more narrow angle towards the tip and a wider angle towards the choil. A more narrow angle makes for a better slicer but a wider angle makes for a tougher edge.

In regards to learning how to sharpening knives: For me its fun now that I found a system that works for me. I used a fixed angle system from KME. Its kind of pricey but it facilitates consistent angle on both side of the edge. With the sharpening stones you have options. You can get a mirror finish on the edge or a "toothy" edge. KME also has attachment you can use to produce a convex grind. I've used this system on pocket knives and kitchen knives. A really sharp kitchen knife is a thing of beauty when you have to prep raw meat, especially chicken.

What makes this knife worth $110? I see that it's made in the US, which is nice, but otherwise I'm a bit confused.
it's extremely well-made, uses CPM-20CV steel, has a lifetime warranty and a manufacturer that stands behind it. the action (opening) is amazingly smooth.

do you need a $110 knife? i don't know that's up to you... but if you use it every day and carry it with you every day, it may be worth buying a good one. if you don't, then by all means, get a $15 kershaw from walmart. nothing wrong with them, they just aren't the same as a top of the line one.

i had my benchmade knife for so long (easily 10+ years) that the blade became noticeably smaller due to the occasional sharpening. i emailed benchmade and they sent me a brand new blade, no questions asked. i don't think that's even necessarily covered, but they unwaveringly stand behind their products.

i swapped the blade out and it's still my EDC to this day.

Oddly I don't see these same people in 5%-off-macbook threads bitching about brand premiums.

People are willing to pay that much, so people are willing to make a knife that can be sold for that. Yes diminishing returns are a thing, but that's for the consumer to decide.

How honorable are they with warranty? I know Kabar is crap. Cutco is good (even though they are the same company). So I'm looking for anyone with experience with this private company.

I'm thinking about one of these. Considering the knife I'd *really* like is a Zero Tolerance 0562CF (in CPM-20CV), but I've never seen it drop below $180 (one time a few years ago, although these days the former MSRP of $240 seems to be a pipe dream as I think $292 is its new normal price.)

This might not be a bad compromise.

Losing knives is not really a problem I seem to have. My s30v Kershaw Blur has been with me nearly daily for the past 6 years.

In for 1. Been looking for a quality knife for awhile now. Like with most of my tools, buy once cry once.

Have always heard great things about benchmade.

Could do with a different color handle but I guess that means it'll be easy to find!

I'm a bit lost myself with these Benchmade knives, but it is what it is. I bought a Benchmade Bugout. Nice! This has a good steel for the blade. Best you read on the advantage/disadvantages to different steels, and it may make a little more sense. My Bugout is undoubtedly very light! It is very noticeable compared to my other knives. The light weight means little to nothing to me, it meant a lot to a friend who is much more into knives than I. YMMV. I don't get it either, but I am thinking about getting this one, after I investigate just how good a price this is. I can't explain that either. Smilie

For those of you that this would matter, Benchmade destroyed perfectly good firearms for the Oregon City Police. These police depts dont have to destroy firearms, they could sell them to a FFL dealer to provide cash for their department. That's a pro gun control publicity stunt, and Benchmade helped facilitate it.
So I choose to pass on any of their products, no matter the deal.

LOL!! Some people really get defensive when asking about the cost of Benchmade. It's like you're talking about their mother wearing combat boots or something. LMAO!!
