Benchmade is well-respected and you do pay a bit for the name, but it earns that with excellent materials, service, technology, and workmanship (quality control being their main issue). IMO it's among the best (for the money) along with Boker, Emerson, and Zero Tolerance. The Griptilian line is well-established (released in 2001) and shines at almost everything. The Axis locks are superb and it's fast, light and smooth; and there's a lot of choice in materials for the blade and the scales.

With many blade steels it's also important who produced it and how it's been treated — Benchmade consistently excels there too. The CPM-20CV in this offers great edge retention and corrosion resistance for the money, while being a bit less tough and harder to sharpen than, e.g., S35VN. As for the handles/scales, I'm not 100% sure what exactly these are, but when you buy Benchmade you can trust it's going to be more than half decent. You can upgrade them later if you want anyway.

Kinda like saying if you're buying $200k cars you should learn take care of them yourself. You're not wrong, it's just not helpful and a bit out of touch.

Back in the 80s benchmade was the shit for butterfly knives. Don't remember them being that expensive? This price is ridiculous for a knife that looks like my Craftsman boxcutter. I'm alai curious if it's more "slickdeals" to sharpen this thing yourself like Rambo…which is free, or send it off to be sharpened, which is also free?

I own quite a few Benchmade knives but have never had them sharpened them. I don't trust the USPS UPS or Fedex to get them back to me. Too much sentimental value may be in them. My dad taught me to sharpen a knife when I got my first Uncle Henry for my birthday but I'm so old I can't remember age probably 8 to 10. Whittling fishing and hunting required a good sharp knife. I have got no problem with others taking advantage of their sharpening service but for me having got things lost in the mail its no for me.
I lost my 850s this way so to say your concerns are legitimate and accurate.

it's extremely well-made, uses CPM-20CV steel, has a lifetime warranty and a manufacturer that stands behind it. the action (opening) is amazingly smooth.

do you need a $110 knife? i don't know that's up to you... but if you use it every day and carry it with you every day, it may be worth buying a good one. if you don't, then by all means, get a $15 kershaw from walmart. nothing wrong with them, they just aren't the same as a top of the line one.

i had my benchmade knife for so long (easily 10+ years) that the blade became noticeably smaller due to the occasional sharpening. i emailed benchmade and they sent me a brand new blade, no questions asked. i don't think that's even necessarily covered, but they unwaveringly stand behind their products.

i swapped the blade out and it's still my EDC to this day.
This is true benchmade will install new blades I sent a broke tip to them and they put a new blade for free.

If you can't understand why some people buy these expensive knives, how can you explain the people wearing $300 shoes / jeans? Even a balenciaga hoody cost $300+ and kids buys them like a $30 backpack lol

Pointless to explain.

For those of you that this would matter, Benchmade destroyed perfectly good firearms for the Oregon City Police. These police depts dont have to destroy firearms, they could sell them to a FFL dealer to provide cash for their department. That's a pro gun control publicity stunt, and Benchmade helped facilitate it.
So I choose to pass on any of their products, no matter the deal.
Way to spread misinformation... this Oregon city police department were required by law to destroy them.

Change the laws that require seized weapons to be destroyed would be the only practical approach if you feel so deeply about it.

I don't understand the downvotes. Can anyone elaborate why this has negative votes?
How can you tell a post is down or upvoted? I only see the option to add to someone's reputation but no indication of what others may have voted

Not always, just when they're relatively expensive for no apparent reason. I picked up a nice little Cold Steel EDC knife the other day for $13 (AUS-8a, made in Taiwan) and I don't recall anyone asking what made it worth $13.
Knives are all up to the user. I have Kershaws which are cheap and durable but edge won't last as long as my benchmades. I sharpen them myself so kinda get the feel of the blades. But benchmade stands by their products with services. Free sharpening I believe and they will send u parts If u happen to drop them in the crevice of ur deck. Love benchmades warranties too

Was going to pull the trigger - pun intended - on this as I've been waiting for it to go on sale in satin as I dont like the cerakote personally (I seem to always scuff them with my paperwheel sharpeners) and then you reminded me of this.
Cant do it... Saved me $121.28.

People tend to get defensive about their hobbies or anything they're passionate about when somebody asks a question like "why would you spend THAT much on [X]??".

As an example. Some women spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on purses when a simple plastic tote would do the job just as well. And if you ask them "what makes a Gucci purse worth $1,000?" you'll probably get a very similar reaction.
You're probably correct, although being compared to the way a woman reacts to a simple question isn't complementary in the least. But I think you are correct.

Is it necessary for a person to explain why people are wearing $300 shoes / jeans? If someone is asking, what makes this item #1 cost so much more than item #2 to educate himself, that is TOTALLY different than saying/implying, it's stupid to spend that much on that knife. That's day n night. One is trying to get educated on something while the other is just speaking from ignorance. Almost polar opposites. I don't get all the defensiveness.
