I also suggest setting it up before Christmas day. Everyone else is going to be getting new hardware too. So things might be slow to update or just fail. Leaving your Switch possibly unplayable until you make an account or update.. Also you want to know it even turns on

You can create a Nintendo account at nintendo.com without a device. But in order to purchase, it looks like you need the "Nintendo Network ID" for that device to be associated with your account.

(I have a Switch but I don't have a 3DS. So, I tried buying a $1.00 3DS game to see if it would let me, and that's the error message I got.)

You may want to reach out to Nintendo Support to see if they can help you ā€” obviously, it'd be nice to have all that squared away without having to completely unbox everything.

My 6/7year old son absolutely loves this game and unlocking the HUGE amount of characters / costumes and creating his own characters in the game. Highly recommend at this price

A warning to anyone buying this game. Some people (including myself) have issues with the game not saving correctly. After having to restart the game 3 times due to completed levels not saving, my son and I gave up on it. It's a known issue, but this developer does not care about fixing issues. They just move onto the next game.
