What's the difference? I'm pretty broke and really want the solar because I spent like more time outside than inside.

Not much, really. The 2 has a higher res screen (not really a big deal) and the ability to download apps/watch faces. I don't really need the solar so my target is a non solar instinct 2 for 200-250. I'm sure you'd be thrilled with this, i have the original instinct and love it. It's really a great watch and super durable.
Is it still like a smart watch? Can I see texts?
I don't have this watch, but I have Fenix 6 pro. I will not call Fenix 6 or instinct as smart watch. They are more fitness watch. You can read text on both Android and iPhone. But you can't respond on iPhone. On Android, you have a set of predefined responses like "Thank you".

I've had mine for a year and love it. Battery lasts around 28 days for me, so I only charge every three weeks. Great backlight for night viewing.
I've been looking at the 2, but not sure I'm seeing a big reason to upgrade.
Thanks for that last bit of detail on text responses. I was wondering if Android phone users were doing some sort of torturous scroll/select one-character-at-a-time bit from their watch to reply, but that makes a lot more sense. In a "canned" fashion of course!
