This game was always free to play, and I put sooo many hours into it.
There were a lot of mods and other quality of life addons that were pretty common on servers. The original maps were already terrific and there were some great custom maps too. XP with a class unlocked buffs that carried over as you switched classes for the course of a campaign (like 2-3 maps in sequence). It was a good system.
Near the end I played mostly with Limited Lives on et.tjw.org (how do I remember this??) because most remaining servers had super short respawn delays and it was becoming COD-like.
Great deal, thanks for sharing!
"Need a medic"
"Defend the west bunker."
"Dynamite planted, dynamite planted...... dynamite DEFUSED!"
This was my favorite free-to-play, multiplayer first-person-shooter (FPS) for quite a while. I was a member of the LZ clan, which played this, back in the day.
If I recall correctly, you play as the Allies or the Nazis and it's bit more than just a team-shooter, there are team objectives, like building/destroying an objective or robbing a bank.
Clan 420 here! Not even sure why I joined, guess I just liked the chill vibes lol
The 'it' multiplayer game from 2003-2005, until BF2 came out. RIP.
I actually learned a little German from playing this game
I held a spot at 75 on splatterladder at one point. I was in Evil Smurfs at the end but also played TWL with Just Cause clan earlier on. I was invited and played in the Quake Wars closed beta but stopped playing when RTCW:ET died down. It's still my favorite game. I wish I had recordings of my gameplay from back then.
wow brings back memories... used to play rtcw demo so much back in the day...going long/short... calling airstrikes were always fun. fact that people still play and good selection of servers show just how addicting this game is.

Wasn't this game always free? It was one of the biggest online shooters in the mid 2000s. Great game.
"Dynamite the old city wall!"
Yeah, it was going to be released as a paid expansion to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I really don't know what happened, but it was released for free as a standalone multiplayer game instead.
I enjoyed RTCW more than Enemy Territory back in the day for the better maps. I believe RTCW maps were ported over to Enemy Territory. It's been so long I'll have to play again to be sure.

According to gametracker, there's at least 5 servers that are mostly full right at this moment.
It's also able to run on anything these days, including Chromebooks and Android phones that can run Wine.
