Got the 32gb for $99
I have a few of the previous generations (4k first gen 2017) in 64gb and never needed the extra space.
I've used Roku, firetstick, builtin sony and samsung streamers. Apple TV is my favorite by far. You can use your regular tv remote to control apple tv. If you have an iphone it will auto pause tv when you get a call i you want.
4K (first generation)
At an Apple Special Event on September 12, 2017, Apple announced the Apple TV 4K which supports 2160p output, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and includes a faster Apple A10X Fusion chip supporting HEVC hardware decoding. Dolby Atmos support was added in tvOS 12. Following the announcement of the new models, the 64 GB version of the Apple TV HD was discontinued. Externally it is similar to the 4th generation model, with the only differences being the addition of vents on the base, the removal of the USB-C port, and the addition of a tactile white ring around the Menu button on the included Siri Remote.
4K (second generation)
On April 20, 2021, Apple announced an updated Apple TV 4K with the A12 Bionic chip, support for high frame rate HDR, HDMI 2.1, and Wi-Fi 6. Its HDMI port supports ARC and eARC, which allows other sources plugged into the television to output audio through Apple TV, including to AirPlay speakers like HomePod. It also has the ability to pair with the ambient light sensor on iPhones with Face ID to optimize its color output, a feature that was also extended to older Apple TVs with tvOS 14.5. AirPlay supports high frame rate HDR playback, allowing videos shot on the iPhone 12 Pro in Dolby Vision 4K 60fps to be mirrored in full resolution. Following the announcement, the previous Apple TV 4K with an A10X Fusion chip was discontinued.
The model also comes with a thicker redesigned Siri Remote with a circular touchpad with navigational buttons, as well as power and mute buttons. The remote does not include an accelerometer and gyroscope, which were present in the previous Siri Remote, making it incompatible with some games. The remote is compatible with previous generation tvOS-based Apple TVs and ships with an updated SKU of the Apple TV HD.
4K (third generation)
On October 18, 2022, Apple announced an updated Apple TV 4K with the A15 Bionic chip, reduced weight and dimensions, and support for HDR10+. It comes in two configurations, a Wi-Fi-only model with 64 GB of storage, and a higher-priced 128GB model with Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a Thread radio. The included Siri Remote charges via USB-C instead of Lightning.
I still use my AppleTV from 2018 and it's faster than my 2021 Firestick. You'll get 6 years out of this so it's worth 3 firesticks plus you won't get bombarded by amazon and can do screen mirroring if you have an iphone. what would you rather have?
I have the 2021 64GB Apple TV, and I preordered the new 128GB model with a faster processor. That being said, you can get a Fire Stick Max with Wifi 6 for $35 if you have Prime. If Amazon's ads don't bother you, there is not a significant difference in performance, but you can buy three Fire Stick Maxes for the price of one Apple TV 2021. The Fire Stick Max is an underrated device.
You haven't tried the Walmart ONN box for $20. Almost half the price of the max with exactly the same 2GB ram and storage, and minimal bloatware. In the end, these are just app machines to stream content on a TV. The faster the processor, the more ram, and more storage means less freezing.

Thanks for the input. I'm seriously considering getting this, but a friend told me he has a fire stick to give me for free. I do not have an established Mac household. Only the wife and kids have the iphones/ipads. What can I do on the AppleTV that I cannot do on the Fire stick?

Reviews on that thing are horrible, and it just came out. All the 5-star reviews appear to be incentivized.
I wonder,, do you need to have the appleTV box exposed so you can use the remote? I mean, my TV is hung on the wall and no wires- Can I hide the small box behind it and will the remote still operate?

Yes. I have mine attached behind the outdoor TV and remote works no problem, even at a distance

I personally dont need the 4K model with where I want this device to go. Is this a better deal for me at $79? Apple TV HD 32GB[walmart.com] It says 2nd gen, but it cant be the 2nd gen from 2010 if it also says it has HBO Max and Disney+. Those services didnt exist then. This may be the better deal for me.
It's not really a price cut because the charge cable, ENET, and Thread support was deleted from the 64GB 2022. That and falling storage prices is how the price was substantially reduced. The 128GB model is $20 cheaper than last year's 64GB, but the extra storage is useless unless you play iTunes games. And, of course, if you don't need ENET or Thread then the 2022 may make sense because it's at least one more year of Apple supporting it with tvOS updates.
Otherwise the 32GB for $99 I find more useful since it has ENET, Thread support, ARC. I have two 2017 4Ks and 1 2021. The 2017s have A10 and are still plenty fast when it comes to both scrolling and REW and FF inside of apps. I just picked up another 2021 model to replace a 2017 just because of the remote. I'll put the 2017 on an HD set I hardly use and still has an ATV HD on it -- that one is painfully slow.

I got this one and it's pretty good for the price. I removed a bunch of bloat with adb and installed a new launcher. Great to be able to install something like New pipe (YouTube frontend without ads) on there. Also aerial view is a badass screensaver.

It is much faster and has a better interface than the Firestick. I have used Disney, Hulu, Netflix, etc. and prefer the Apple apps to Amazon's for streaming.
I also use a program called Air Video Server to stream content on my PC using my Ipad. I did not bother with Plex on my new computer. You do not get the the thumbnails as you do with Plex but I like the simplicity of just drilling down the folders on my PC.

64GB is $129, but removes Ethernet port for wifi only connections.
128GB model is $149 and retains the ethernet port
