However this claim specifically is actually true, I'm not sure about environmental effects but fabric softener build is a real and very common issue in washing machines and can damage them. It's recommended to either not use fabric softener, or if you want to use them, use half the suggested amount and frequently run hot water washes (not always cold) to prevent the build up of scrud.
