I moved from roku 4k stick apple tv when amazon had it for $110. At first, I was not too happy that I could not make a purchase directly from amazon app or vudu app, (probably because apple tv charged them too much?). Finding the cheapest price across different platforms is more difficult on apple tv. The remote control was sleek but too sensitive at first. I could not tell the difference in picture quality on HD shows.

Then, I got to compare the PQ difference in 4k films. Amazon video on Roku, or through apple TV, did not come close to the videos on itune on apple tv picture quality, especially when I connected apple TV via ethernet cable. Since then, I don't mind missing out on amazon video deals or vudu deals. I just wait for sales on apple tv. I use it with LG C1 OLED 83.

apple is releasing the 3rd generation 4K on Nov 4 2022. Per Amazon, the minimum is 64GB listed at $129.00 - https://www.amazon.com/2022-Apple...B0BJLDVJTC

Amazon has the same 2021 version with 32GB for $99.99 - https://www.amazon.com/2021-Apple...B0933D3SN6

I am sure they will have holiday special for the 2022 3rd gen with 64GB for a decent $99.

Not sure if Costco is a great deal

It is a good deal for now since you can return it after the price drops again if that indeed happens. I am returning the one I bought from amazon for $124 (64gb) to get the new one though since the price difference is so small.

this might be the first time that there are actual performance differences between the 2 models coming out. The 128GB new apple TV adds Ethernet and Thread smart home networking (thread smart is another smart home mesh networking service option).

I bought the Onn 4k player from Walmart for $19.88. Android TV OS with all the streaming apps available on Google play store. Streams movies/tv from Plex server just fine. Other than just being an Apple purist, why would I want to pay more for this? Serious question, not trying to shit on the post.

I would say the user experience is much better especially if you have bought into apple devices. I have 2 roku ultra, one roku stick, and 2 Apple TV 4K with the older touch remote. I watch extensively on Apple TV, Netflix, HBO max, Disney+, prime video, etc. on 120"+ projector screen. The performance is on par except the stick is noticeably slow. I don't really chasing the latest gen device… and I don't feel the need. $99 is a great deal.

I use my Apple TVs as cable boxes with the Channels app and HDHomerun. So, to me, it makes sense to upgrade every so often to the newest, and I rotate the old ones down to the other TVs in our house

Goes back to how deep you're in the Apple services ecosystem. The AppleTV also serves as a HomeKit (Apple's smart home brand) hub.
