Really great game! It takes the best parts of Catan and adds a tableau-building element. Relatively easy to teach to people who have some experience with modern board games. And there's very little downtime between turns since players are rewarded for the dice rolls of other players.

There are a handful of expansions out but none of them are really necessary.

May not seem like it from the theme, but they have very similar mechanics. Dice rolling and using resources to increase your rewards and odds. Space base is considered a catan killer

It's really not comparable to Catan at all? The only thing they have in common is rolling dice for random resources, which is arguably Catans worst part because it can lead to dead turns causing player disengagement. Space Base actually makes that mechanic fun because you will be earning something with every dice roll.

I agree that the similarities to Catan are very limited, but it's the closest mass market game that a decent amount of people would be familiar with. I could have said it plays like Machi Koro or Dice Forge but very few people would know what I was talking about.

But I disagree that the dice rolling is the worst part of Catan, that would definitely be the negotiating that grinds down each turn to a crawl.

Really great engine building game with some fun expansions. Best aspect of the game is that it allows each player to participate/benefit on every players turn and not just their own. Set up your passive income dreams, but in space!

I always say that if you like the probability and luck mitigation in catan - play space base. If you like the trading - play Bohnanza.

Don't think, just buy. My 72 y.o. mother loved playing it the first time (she won!). Highly recommended.
