Does it take decent portrait style pictures with bokeh? I know a wider apature is better for that but I'm trying to cut down on costs, just bought a z5 and trying to narrow it down to a couple lenses to buy, was considering this and a 50ish mm 1.8 prime, but I'm brand new to digital photography so I'd take suggestions, I shot 35mm for years and had my own darkroom, but I never made the transition, just started trying to today, bought a z5 and a Sony a6100 but after reading more reviews I think the Sony will go back and I'll keep the Nikon most likely

Honestly for a couple hundred more, I'd do the Z 28-75mm f/2.8 that's for sale everywhere ($200 0ff) right now. Great all around lens.

It could, but because it's relatively slow wide open you'd need to zoom in from a longer focal length like 100mm to get the portrait look you want. Really though, this is just not the correct tool for that job. This is the kind of lens I can put on my camera for a weeklong trip to Europe and never take it off. However if I'm looking to do some portrait work I put on either an 85mm or a 50mm.

Thanks, it's been so long since I've been in the game I barely remember any of it, I appreciate the help and I was starting to lean towards that 28-75 2.8 and a prime as my two lenses to start, I'll get something with more reach later I think, or I'll pick up that ftz adapter and try and snag a couple older used f mount options to add more.

If you are a hobbyist like me, and looking for primes, the Viltrox primes are pretty darn good for the dough.

I shoot portraits. The 28-75 or 24-70 4 z lens both would be great for your use. The Nikon 50 1.8 z is s great prrformer. Ive got a Zeiss 135 and 85 and hardly ever use. Theres a reason the 24-70 range is so used by Photographers. It gives you lots of leeway in tight spaces. The 70-200 is also a killer portrait lens. The Sigma 40mm destroys almost any lens in the 40-50 range.

Thank you, I appreciate the information, I ended up with the 50mm 1.8 and the 105mm z lens, I still need to buy a wide angle prime or a basic zoom lens but I've been really happy with the two I bought so far, pretty fantastic quality considering im still re-learning what im doing

Check your local Best Buys for pricing on the 14-30 S lens. 2 near me have them on clearance for 50% off. Most don't, but it's worth a trip to save $600.

Wow thank you, I'll be checking it out tomorrow for sure
