I have a mini and a two player version with the trackball. Nice stuff! (Keep an eye out for the 2 player on Black Friday!)
AtGames is supporting the homebrew crowd. I'm considering getting another mini or 2 player so I can have a dedicated 4 player setup, plus a "Track and Field" beater!
For some interesting reading YouTube "CoinOpsX Version 5 Sauce" to see what the modding community has done with this hardware, with SUPPORT from AtGames!
For ease of use, check out AtGames included software. They're constantly developing and adding new games. Thank goodness someone is doing this! If they can get support for the publishers, which seems to be what they're trying to do, they'll be heroes. And get the $$$ they deserve for all the work!
And, you can hook this up to a PC with the USB cable, or, use the supplied "puck" via HDMI and use the stick wirelessly, via Bluetooth on your TV. The puck has a USB port which supports a flash drive for your homebrews. Works great with MAME and all the typical stuff.
Just got this for my classroom when it was $45. A bit of trial and error and some downloads from archive.org and now I get to school my students at the original Super Mario Kart on the big screen!
It's not a powerhouse and yeah you could maybe build your own RetroPie for slightly cheaper, but the controller deck is substantial and probably worth the $40 alone. 16 bit games and below run at native speed and are a joy to play.
I did also successfully get it to hook up to an 8bitdo FC30 bluetooth controller, though the key mapping needed some tweaking.
I ordered the last deal on Newegg and they cancelled my order. A Raspberry Pi 4 is more powerful than an AtGames Core, so I just ordered the controller off of eBay for a little less.
