The movie cuts out half of the treasure hunt and starts well after where the book starts. There is a significant benefit to reading the book rather than watching the movie. Some of the big reveals will be anticlimactic if you've seen the movie (and the characters), but still worth it to fill in the rest of the story.

Player 2 isn't as good as the first, but I feel it is still worth the read.

Not terribly so, but less of a race that the movie focused on. Gets most of the main points.

As someone who enjoyed the first one, Would not recommend the sequel book ready player two, unless you're really into Prince (musician references) and really obscure 80/90's references.

Reeked of trying too hard. Never hit the same nostalgic mark that many enjoyed in the 1st because so many references were too obscure.
Instead of the ease and natural flow of the story taking over he tried so hard to appeal to woke cultural trends to the extent the whole thing became tedious to read.

Adored this book and loved the audiobook even more. I used to re-listen to the audiobook to help me fall asleep during early pandemic insomnia nights. Wil Wheaton's voice and a story full of 80s references was just comforting.

I personally enjoyed the book, lots of cool '80s references. Better than the movie. The audiobook read by Wil Wheaton what's good too, they did a great job bringing it to life and he does a good job kind of capturing that sarcastic vibe.

Loved the book. Keep it on the self to pick up occasionally. The ending is good but this book truly shines in the first half, I don't even reread the whole thing, just the arc and world building is fun and exciting

Loved this book, especially the audio version with Will Wheaton narrating. Cline's Armada is another good one too, but skip on P2, like others said tries too hard and feels redundant. Really really wish the P1 movie was better made.

Any book that dedicates an entire chapter to the band Rush is simply awesome. Movie removed virtually all references to "Rush. Book : 10. Movie: 4

I enjoyed the book, but the writer has a habit of repeatedly dumping paragraphs worth of 80's references at one time. I tolerated it for this book because it was enjoyable, but when he started doing it again in his second book Armada, I immediately stopped reading it. I didn't even bother reading the sequel. This guy is a one trick pony that wore out his shtick after one book.

The book is worth a read. The work he creates is interesting, the story is engaging, and the characters are likable. However the writing is terrible and many of the 80s references he expects everyone to know are actually quite niche. The author seems to believe that everyone who grew up in the 80s should know the same stuff, yet he also leaves out a lot of items from pop culture because he was obviously in his click and did not find them as universal as items from his click. Still worth a read, much better than the movie.

Different opinion here, but I thought the movie was underwhelming. Part of that is because they couldn't secure rights to many of the pop culture reference points made in the book. For many readers, the references to music, movies, and games of that era tripped the nostalgia wire and made a lot of passionate followers of the book. Spielberg didn't really get that, so he created what he created, which felt different in tone and feel.

As an aside, Cline also co-wrote the screenplay for Fanboys if anyone got to see that with its Star Wars references and cameos.
