I have bought Acer desktops over the years, and I learned to hardly add anything to the pc, I do add ram and SSD card, but don't add external graphics cards, I am very, very careful not to tax the power supply at all. And have not had power supply issues in years, because I keep pre-built PC's virginal as best I can. Power Supply can trash these pre-builts because generally they use very cheap power supplies, and they are proprritary and very expensive to replace, ... plus blown Power Supplies can harm ram, ssd, nvme, motherboard, chipset.
Update us on your Allstate situation, because there are thousands of us that have gotten these Acer refurbs and want to know if the 2 year Allstate warranty is any good.
My first refurbished of the same model from a couple months ago was basically perfect and I haven't had a single issue. I'm wondering if the price drop now isn't them sending out returns from the initial batches.
Hopefully I won't have any issues getting my money back, but that's what charge-backs are for! I'm not going to spin the wheel for another one. I hope everyone else has a better experience.
The Acer screen came up, then a beep, then black screen on my monitor stating "Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected device and press a key". So I manually turned it off and back on again. Same message. Did it again, this time it goes to Windows setup and makes it all the way through initial Windows setup. So I'm thinking it was an initial fluke and I reboot from start menu, and I'm back to the error about proper boot device. I repeat about 20 times changing usb and hdmi ports along with a different usb keyboard, and finally say screw it and put it back in the box and submit my return. Nothing in the disk drive, nothing other than keyboard, mouse, monitor plugged in. Sure I could probably troubleshoot everything and come to a working solution - but that's not really what I like to do with something I just purchased straight out of the box that is supposedly tested.
This is my third Acer refurbished (desktop same exact as this and a laptop). The other two have been functionally perfect. I've gone down the clean usb stick install route with my first XC so I understand the nuances you write of. This one is a dud both functionally and visually - straight out of the box.
I remember buying a brand new laserdisc player many years ago. Remember those? Lol. It would power on but wouldn't spin the disc. I opened it up and the wire going to the motor had come loose on it's journey from China or wherever it was made. Plugged it in again and all was good.

Then I
- Added 8GB RAM ($25) , it's necessary when opening 30-40 tabs on chrome and run all other applications at the same time.
- Replaced the 256 drive with a 1T nvme drive ($70). This isn't necessary as 256GB is plenty for school work and programming tools etc. but 1T nvme drives are cheap these days.
- Replaced the stock cooler master CPU fan with another more quiet cooler master fan ($15). This is also unnecessary since the fan noise wasn't bad to begin with.
I originally bought the Dell OptiPlex 7050 micro ($150, with i5-6600T) but my kid complained about the fan noise when the system is loaded.
The machine has been great so far. USB-C port and DVD drive are bonus
