That is what makes twinkly lights so special ,you are paying a premium for all of the R&D that went into coding the app
The controller is a basic ESP8266 with SPI flash , the lights are likely ws2128 ,ws2812b or ws2811
I am looking to figure out how to dump the FW from the twinkly controller so I can flash my own ESP8266 boards with it and buy ws2812 strings cheap from AliExpress and get to use their amazing app , specifically the AI camera features that automatically map the LED's for you and let you just instantly get the complex animations wit4hout spending years trying to map and code it toirself
But hey if you want to replace the twinkly controller I will be willing to buy it
You are paying a premium for the software not the hardware
the hardware is nothing special you can get addressable strings from AliExpress cheap and an ESP board for like $4 and just flash WLED to it if that is what you want and it will be much cheaper.

Anyone know the terms for BIG25?
In their shoes, I'm much rather build a green construction paper silhouette on the wall, and have presents underneath it.
I'm deciding to go with Costco's 7.5' tree (Item #1487014). It's $600 online but will be on sale for $400 in-stores beginning Monday. It's considerably more relative to this BigLots tree but still much cheaper compared to Balsam Hill trees it's alleged to rival. We're making the investment hoping to not have to, and not want to, upgrade for at least a decade.
Things I considered:
- 1,850 micro leds vs 540 (mini?) leds - not twinkly though, if that matters to you.
- 4,795 branch tips vs 2,122 branch tips - this was the driving factor.
- 4.6 stars from 1149 reviews.
- Backed by Costco's great return policy.
If the above is not important and you're in the market, this BigLots tree makes a lot of sense. Just thought I'd share another perspective.

Thanks for the info on Costco tree, yeah it will be worth the extra to me if the tree lasts for a really long time, which it should.
