I think it's part of why they don't break as easily as some brands. Also they insulate fairly well. I actually don't put mine on a lunchbox... Just drop them into my toddler's backpack. It's less than 3 hours until lunch and she actually prefers her food room temp.
We don't give anything that requires sauces, so that center round sauce compartment isn't as useful for us.
