I ordered refurbished Kindle Paperwhite (2015) from Woot a few weeks ago. The device arrived defective as the backlight is not working. I contacted Woot and customer service replied that there is no replacement available for me because the refurbished Kindle Paperwhite (2015) is no more.
As a result, I trade-in the defective device to Amazon for a new paperwhite.
Now, I am surprised they are selling those refurbished (2015 version) again, in various conditions. Where do they come from?

Since it's from Woot, an Amazon company, I'd guess they're stocked from Amazon's trade-ins. So the defective device you just traded in might have gotten cycled back into the Woot sale.
It would be hilarious of customer service reached back out and said, "Great news, we just received more units if you'd still like to replace yours!"
An interesting observation. The Kindle Paperwhite (2015) is $19.99 from Woot and you could trade that in on Amazon for $25. So, not only you can get your money back (in the form of Amazon GC) but you can also get 20% off on any new kindle purchase.

A low price does not a Slickdeals make. Even if they weren't refurb, the batteries in these items are several years old. Batteries degrade over time. So no matter what, you're getting an old Kindle with questionable lifespan. Further, all the Paperwhite models are ad-supported.
Bought a few of these and I have to say QA is definitely not that stringent. I've got one that has some screen burn-in and another with a defective charging cable.
If you're looking for a used Kindle you can get great deals striking out on your own. They're usually good ones on Facebook Marketplace from local buyers. I got a 32 GB Paperwhite 4 (previous generation) for $40 with a case. Message to Amazon got the ads removed for free. I've gotten a Kindle Voyage with the Amazon Original Origami case for $50 in newer condition even had the retail box.
Not saying Woot is bad but there are other options.

I had the same issue when I ordered a first gen echo show a few months ago. It would not power on so when I called in they said throw it away we'll refund you.
