I had a painstakingly long chat with Roku on this (it was terrible) and finally found out that the only difference between the 3820R and 3820R2 is who is selling it. Roku only sells the R2. Other retailers sell the R. Hope that helps.

I have this model and it can easily overheat when watching 4k broadcast without an HDMI extension.

Everyone seems to have this on sale right now, however I notice the one on the roku site has the model as 3820R2 whereas best buy, target etc list it as 3820R. Is there a difference? Is it worth it to order this one and return the one I bought in the previous deal from a couple weeks ago that is the 3820R?

Yes I'm also curious as to the difference between the 3820R2 directly from Roku vs the 3820R from Target/BestBuy . . . is it the wireless technology that is better in the R2 version?

I just need something to plug my USB flash drives into that can play mkv files with DTS audio. Will this let me do that? Don't need streaming features or anything.

Good information. There's probably less buffering with the 5 GHz chip inside.

I also use my Ultra to play files from USB.

No USB ports on this one. Ultra has it and the soundbars as well.
