Thanks, but I also need the 17". My current 14" daily driver is getting harder to see as I get older. I'm not ready to admit I need glasses yet. LOL
Reporting back after successful Staples pickup and addition of 16gb TeamGroup brand DDR4 SODIMM.

Ram used: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089W6WV3L

Decent build quality, body entirely made of polymer (injection molded) but feels quite durable. There is a nice "texture" to the screen bezel that breaks up the otherwise plain design. Decent screen in my opinion. Perfectly fine for streaming, general office work. Unclear on maximum brightness nits, but is usable outside on a sunny day. Have not had a chance to test the battery life yet.

Removal of the back panel is very simple, all screws are Philips and only two different sizes. Used a plastic guitar pick style wedge to remove the back panel, and it pops out with ease.

Does come preloaded with McAfee bloatware and some Asus tools but not much else. One thing that is interesting is their decision to "tilt" the NVME slot to compensate for the large fan.

All in all, happy with this machine so far. This replaced my mother's Dell Inspiron 15.6 from 2015 that was having display issues. The "case" size is about the same as the old dell, but added ~1.7 inches of screen real-estate. As others have said, this is definitely overkill for my mother who is 63 and will primarily use this for streaming and light photo editing. That being said, she only gets a new computer once every decade or so, so I felt at this pricepoint this Asus was a good move.

Thanks for sharing this deal!
Lol. You think 63 year old people are going to re-learn an operating system? Most of them can't use windows as it is, and it's been out for 30 years.

11th gen for av1 decoding... so 12th gen is awesome for the foreseeable future. (Amd is going to be at least 6xxx)

I got my parents tablets and 4k tv. They just select the video on the tablet and send it to the TV.

Do let me know how your mom like the laptop. I was looking for a laptop for my parents too. Not sure if they want to lug a big laptop around. I was thinking about oled. or maybe a screen dock for the Samsung phone, because they are doing everything else on the phone anyway.

Quote from SlickDit :
The problem with trying to drive multiple displays through a USB-C hub is ultimately bandwidth. I was trying to find a good explanation but I had to settle:

https://www.thunderbolttechnology..._FINAL.pdf
https://www.intel.com/content/www...phics.html
https://www.tomshardware.com/news...-explained

Like you, i'm a little behind and not keeping up with the what these laptops are shipping with these days but let's assume USB 3.2 gen 2 (or 3.1 gen 2 or whatever it's called). That's a 10 Gbps pipe you have. According to Intel, QHD at 8-bit/60hz is 6.64 Gbps. Not much room for QHD and anything else, and even without anything else, seemingly not enough for 2x QHD. You might be ok if you back down to 24Hz

Maybe our savior is USB4 but again I don't know what laptops are shipping with this yet.

This was all assuming that y'all need to push the video through the docking station. If you use the displayport-over-USB of ___ laptop plus its dedicated video out plug for two monitors, this might negate any USB-C/3 bandwidth issues.

Regarding price, I haven't seen anything recently with TB that was less than like $700. 17" complicates things further
I think if you connect two monitors in series not parallel, you could do that with a USB-C 3.2 gen 2. First Connect first monitor to your laptop's usb c port and that use the USB C port in the monitor to connect to the USB C of second monitor. .

Please correct if I am wrong.

I may have to settle, because I feel I am chasing a unicorn. Really want thunderbolt so I can hook up a dock with multiple displays. It's really more of a luggable workstation for me. But maybe the bigger screen will be okay as a secondary and drive primary on hdmi.
You can plug one display into USB-C and one into HDMI. Some USB-C docks support multiple displays, too. hug

I don't think so. I attempted to plug a 90w USB-c charger into the port and it didn't charge. That being said, it was right out of the box and maybe I should've just waited a while...

The USB-C Port does not have a "power" symbol on the side, so i'm not sure if that matters but I'm pretty sure it doesn't allow charging through USB-C.

Absolutely! Just need a small Phillips driver and a credit card. Should be videos on YouTube but having a hard time finding any. Look at my pictures in my previous post. Once you remove the bottom cover there's a simple "click in" ram slot.
Thanks Bro! Nowadays they are making everything hard for common people to fix ourselves. All companies want for us to not own anything and be happy with that.

I added a 16GB DDR4 3200mhz stick to my unit, works great. There is one extra SODIMM slot, the 8gb it comes with is soldered.

I thought the whole system supports only 16gb ? So you can add only 8gb to extra slot ? So are you able to see 24gb as your ram after adding 16gb?

Yes, 24gb usable. I believe the chipset supports up to 128gb of ram, though I don't know that the chipset would necessarily be the limiting factor?

Either way, 24gb shows up and is usable.

Do you think it is possible to put 32gb in the empty slot and make it 40gb total? I tried to find the max supported RAM for this system and the Asus official site [asus.com] states "up to 16gb" only, whereas this site [laptopmedia.com] says "up to 40gb", and Crucial [crucial.com] says "max 24GB"

So last week I picked up a $299 gateway Gateway 15.6" Ultra Slim Notebook, FHD, Intel® Core™ i5-1135G7, Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM deals from Walmart. I wasn't too impressed with the screen, but other than that it was surprisingly fast, believe it or not, this Asus laptop seems slower. Maybe it's the memory?

Wanting a larger screen I thought I'd try this out. Screen, hands down is better. My major complaint and hurdle is the USB port. On that cheap gateway, I was able to charge it using a USB-C Charger yay! so I assumed that would be common with a more expensive laptop, Nope couldn't get it to charge.

Then I tried connecting my extra mobile 15.6 USB monitor. This was plug-and-play on the gateway, but here I get an error. Yes, I could connect a USB cable and an HDMI cable, but one cable is just so much more convenient and cleaner.

Any recommendations on how to get my monitor to work or recommendations on another inexpensive 17" laptop??

I purchased this and added a 16GB RAM stick as suggested here. Now shows 24GB usable. So far happy. Only concern is not sure how long the battery will last.
