This one won't strip hdcp you'll need a more powerful one and those usually go for $16+
One handy use for these is to indirectly remove HDCP security. I always keep a cheap 1x2 splitter handy for troubleshooting issues I think might be related to HDCP security (which can be particularly aggressive on things like some cable company set top boxes).

Good luck!

How can you tell if the splitter you buy will do that?

you can't really tell, as they're not legally allowed to do so (and so they can't advertise that feature). Most of the ones that do have been removed from Amazon, even if they DON'T advertise the feature.

I had to buy 3 different splitters to find one that worked, which was the ViewHD VHD-1x2MN3D (~$20 on eBay).

Read the description...
"Bi-Directional"

But... it can't do 2 displays simultaneously, like most splitters can

Then it is a switcher.... switcher switch between signal output or input (both for bi directional), splitter split signal to two output simultaneously, there's no point to go the other direction for the splitter.

My non-HDMI (composite) example:
I have my cable box connected via a composite connection to a Magnavox DVR. It records fine to the hard drive, and then later I play that recording on the TV. But when I try to further record that program to A DVD via the Magnavox's built-in DVD recorder (or an external DVD recorder), it won't let me for most cable programs because of HDCP.. It knows, damn it, it, knows! (Not that I'm selling that DVD, I just want to bring it to another house.)

I use one of these to split my cable box to two TV's. Also have a HDMI to ethernet adapter and run the ethernet from the basement to upstairs. Also have the logitech remote and hub set up so I can control the basement cable box from upstairs. I bought splitter and extender via slickdeals, so recouped money spent in a few months of lowering my cable bill by $10/month. Next step is to extend one of the IR blasters on the hub from downstairs to upstairs so I can control the upstairs components via the Logitech hub (living room TV is connected to my 2 channel fancy stereo). Total Frankenstein setup that works great. What's nice about the logitech hub is that it always just works, not like a traditional logitech remote where your wife/gf/kid constantly complains when they point the remote for half a second towards the equipment and not all of it turns on.
