This very high impedance amp limits the number of headphones that will sound good when matched with it.
It would likely be a good match with very high impedance phones, such as
Beyerdynamic DT880 (600 Ohm)
Beyerdynamic DT990 (600 Ohm)
Beyerdynamic T1 (600 Ohm)
Sennheiser HD580 (300 Ohm) Note the new HD58X model is 150 Ohm.
Sennheiser HD600 (300 Ohm)
Sennheiser HD650/HD6XX (300 Ohm)
Sennheiser HD800 (300 Ohm)
Beyerdynamic T1 (gen 2) 600 ohm
AKG K240 600 ohm
The lower impedance phones are likely to show poor driver damping control in bass and more distortion. Low damping can cause loose, boomy and indistinct bass.
Low impedance headphones are not recommended for high output impedance amplifiers.
I was reading somewhere that the PHA3's output impedance is 200 ohms and that that's an immediate disqualifier in terms of having a neutral frequency response, etc.
Can any more knowledgeable folks offer any advice? I'd be driving Sennheiser 58x's and 560s's. Thanks.
The PHA-3 Portable Stereo Headphone Amplifier from Marantz is a field production amplifier that provides three independent headphone feeds from balanced or unbalanced sources. It can be used to drive headphones to high levels with low distortion and is ideal for field broadcast production, portable audio/video production crews, and live sound applications.
Featuring balanced XLR, 1/4", and 1/8" stereo inputs, the amplifier delivers critical audio monitoring even under high SPL conditions. There is a dual-color power LED with a low-battery power indicator. It is built with a rugged metal case and the ability to daisy-chain additional units utilizing the loop outputs. It can run on two AA batteries or the included external power supply.
Three independent headphone outputs with individual level controls
Balanced XLR inputs or 1/4" and 1/8" stereo inputs
1/4" loop output for daisy-chaining additional units in series for extra outputs
Parallel 1/8" and 1/4" outputs with two additional 1/4" outputs
Internal power (2x AA) or external power (5-17 VDC) with seamless power switchover
Dual-color power LED. GREEN indicates power with good battery - RED indicates low battery power (LED turns RED when 4 hours of battery life remain)
Rugged aluminum chassis with strap loops for wearing or mounting

Thanks. So based on your advice I take it that the 130 ohm 560s and 150 ohm 58x are no go's for this Amp?

I think maybe so. It's all a matter of degrees, the exact Amp-Phone match, how critical the listener is, the quality of your source recordings, against the very low price you're paying for this amp.
It's not going to blow up or anything. It may sound quite ok.
love my sennheisers. if this ain't audiophile grade I can't risk my sennheisers on it
You should connect your audiophile grade head phones through an audiophile grade ethernet router to improve the audio 🤔 new LTT video on YouTube about how it is basically snake oil

Not a headphone amp guy but this looks like pro equipment, like guys on TV sets or who knows sidelines using headphones etc
This is perfect for say people making a podcast, a band, etc. Where you need multiple headphone outputs, most digital interfaces only offer one.
But just to power high end headphones, there are plenty of amps out there. For $50 this is a great deal though just check the specs vs your headphones.
