I love narrative-driven walking sims like What Remains of Edith Finch and Life Is Strange: True Colors (not a big fan of the "puzzle" mechanics of LIS 1). If I just want to play this as a straightforward story, do the multiple-counselor mechanics and other things designed around multiplayer interfere with that, or does it flow smoothly in a single-player experience? And do you think the story "scary/gory/horror" good or actually good?

I think it flows smoothly enough. I played it as single-player and had no issues with it.

Also, I'm 100% with you on LIS. Enjoyed True Colors a lot, and while I liked LIS1, I was annoyed by the puzzle sections of that game.

Keep in mind - the choices in this game matter MORE than LIS, as it has multiple endings.
