I want the 12.9 for the big screen since my 2018 11 pro works just fine. I feel that's the only way I can justify the upgrade.
Except that no softwares or apps exist to take advantage of the specs. Apple for example requires developers to limit the RAM requirement to 5 GB. Why spend more when not entirely use it?
Bad choice for basic media consumption for another example.
When I bought my M1 11" pro early this year ($599 open box), I thought for sure the next one would get the upgraded screen that the 12.9" has and I would regret my purchase. Guess not.
The 11" is the perfect size for me, but I would like the better black levels like the 12.9". In hindsight, the standard iPad probably would have been fine for my purposes, but I figured for $600 the M1 should future proof just a bit more…then again, Apple knows how to slow any device down.

I for example wanted the 12.9 iPad pro m1 128gb however I don't think it would be worth as basic media consumption even for $699.99. I love giant tablet but it not enough appeal to drop that much $.
I am torn between iPad 9th for $249, Air4 for $349.99 and iPad Pro 11" for $599.
Buy nice or buy twice. Like I don't want to upgrade every few years but I don't want to future proof knowing that technology will always improve.

I'm in the same boat as you. I'll probably with the 9th edition iPad when I can find it for 250

12.9" screen is 40% larger but 50% heavier. I too struggled to find the right balance so I got the ipad Mini and it is used all the time when at home instead of my phone.

Great iPad nevertheless
Starting with iPadOS 15, apps can request up to 12GB of RAM; however, as far as I know, there are no iPad apps complex enough to require that much resource.
