This is constantly on sale around $450, and with the recent (finally!) announcement of the DS923+, this is almost certain to go on deep discount for BF.

Not true. I have not seen the DS920+ for less than $550 for a while. It was on for 450 some times ago but I have not seen that price since. Hope that BF will bring back the 450 price since I was looking to buy one.

Last time it was under 500 was in july - hopefully similar this BF...:

I bought a used one recently and added 16GB ram to it for a total of 20GB. Made it much smoother. Here's the ram I bought: Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR X8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266

It's been known that you could add more ram. Lots of reddit discussion about this https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...are_button

On their site(https://www.synology.com/en-us/pr...20+#specs) it says "Maximum Memory Capacity is 8 GB (4 GB + 4 GB)" So idk why you put 16GB RAM.

Cause it can actually support more than 8gb

Interesting, What is the max limit of RAM can 920+ take?

Sweet, Thanks for the link. This is great for me since I plan on getting the 920+ when it goes on sale.

I was going to wait too until I found a used one for a very good price, under $400. I also added a 2.5G adapter from the brand Plugable to improve transfer rates.

Loooove my ds918+. Must say one of my best purchases. It just works. It's stable. It's easy to setup and maintain. Of course there's cheaper alternatives but why risk it with data?

The DS923+ was recently announced, but it's a bit polarizing as they've decided to switch over to AMD for the added computing horsepower per dollar, while effectively dropping all of the built in media support advantages of Intel's QSV hardware encoding.
NASCompares on YouTube has done a few videos over the past week, discussing the gains and losses between the different platforms, and why he thinks that Synology is basically trading their home media audience for a more SMB focused audience with the DS923+.

Yeah, I guess my main nas right now is a 1520+ so I use qsv on that for transcoding, so it doesn't really matter if the new one has it or not. If they discount them 923 this holiday season then I'll go with that. Its mainly going to be used as a standalone expansion for me. Maybe I should go with qnap?

Yes, you'll also need a 2.5G switch and make sure your PC has a 2.5G Ethernet port. My motherboard already had the port.
