Fender killed the $400-$500 Mexican made Standard Strats and Teles a few years ago to increase prices of the lower tier Squier brand. As a result of this, all of their prices have been pushed up.

Paul Ferro (it was misspelled as "Pau" by his first grade teacher and stuck with him forever) was the person who designed the first fingerboard for Fender and receives a royalty on every guitar sold.
Or, a type of wood that is dark and more ecologically sustainable than ebony.

Yep.
It's not just that though. I saw their prices creep up due to inflation too. I have been waiting and waiting to get a good deal on a Fender Player Strat in a color I like, and I saw them get two price hikes. The most recent one was not too long ago, for $50 per instrument, across the entire Player Series.
Due to the price hikes, I totally gave up and will wait for after the crash in discretionary income to affect musical instrument prices across the board.

These "Player Series" are the Made in Mexico Strats. They changed the name because "Player Series" sounds better to those not in the know. They've been slowly increasing the price beyond inflation numbers, thus increasing their profit margins. They saw the increase in sales during Covid and decided to increase the prices three times since. This happened after they reported the highest profits in the history of the company. The Squire models are their only models that haven't increased in price faster than inflation. I sold my MIM Strat and recently bought a Monoprice Strat clone for $80 that sounded and played better, and was setup better from the factory.

I couldve sworn these model strats were priced at 499 when I was still in school. I actually, still have my sunburst mexican strat i bought for 500 from GC back in 2012-13. Sad to see these prices go up so much
This is not a deal: Guitar Center sells these for this same price about one week out of every month. This is the "real price" for Player's Series models.

yes all name brand axes have doubled in the past 6-7 years,no more musical guitars for most of US.
Made me think of Wayne's World:
"Wow. '64 Fender Stratocaster in classic white with triple single coil pickups and a whammy bar."
Except this is HSS! Haha
Or Zappa's "Joe's Garage"
It wasn't very large
There was just enough room to cram the drums
In the corner over by the Dodge
It was a 54
With a mashed up door
And a cheesy little lamp
With a sign on the front said "Fender Champ"
And a secondhand guitar
It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar

Few years ago guitar manufacturers had issues sourcing rosewood, so they started using Pau Ferro as an alternative. It's similar to rosewood, not better, not worse, certainly not more desirable.

Edit: Also, anyone saying they won't get it because of the pickguard color... You guys know you can buy pickguards separately, right?
