Just piggybacking on what was said earlier. I have a son born with a severe disability leaving his right hand with no grip at all. However we're fortunate because he's cognitively typical otherwise.

Effectively Microsoft went out and designed a controller almost precisely for his use case. Unfortunately we only have a PS4 ( bought it well before this was invented) but this makes me highly likely to switch to Xbox going forward.

I guess what I'm saying is, Microsoft is far from being a "noble" company. But what they did in this particular instance is literally one of the noblest things I have ever seen a company do. My genuine feeling from someone completely unassociated with the organization in any way, shape or form.

This is probably the single most impactful device ever created for the disabled gaming scene. Disabled gamers basically had to get custom controller setups created for them by a medical device professional, so that can easily surpass $2k very quickly.

This controller lets you set up whatever controls layout you want by plugging buttons and sensors into the back row of 3.5mm audio jacks.

To see this niche of a product on sale at all is amazing. I would honestly buy one just to support the design team for making something so pro consumer.

Logitech makes an accessory set with some things, and it is available from the usual Best Buy, Target, etc. But the really useful things are by third parties such as https://warfighterengaged.org/shop.

Not sure if somebody else has already mentioned this but brook gaming makes adapters called the wingman that would make one of these work with a ps4

This is a great price for a great piece of technology. If I knew any gamers with disabilities I'd gladly pick one up for them!

The MSFT of today is vastly different in mission and culture from what it was in the pre-Satya days. On the scale of evil tech companies, they are pretty tame by comparison to goog, meta and amzn.

MS is literally a saint compared to Google, Meta/FB and Amazon. Isn't it amazing that we stopped talking about Walmart as the big evil corporation and now the other are so bad that's where our focus is?

I'm not sure if Phil Spencer (the head of the xbox team) is responsible for this decision, but he might be... definitely give him the credit. He runs that division of Microsoft holistically and the direction that he's taking things is one reason that I'm backing Xbox.

I was just reading about how this was almost cut, until the employees saved it. It makes me want to order a couple to donate to an org that could make use of them.

Satya Nadella's (MS CEO) son had CP before passing away at 26 in March of this year. Disability awareness month is here and it's a good tribute (even if it was a coincidence) to have such a device go on sale. I'm not sure if the CEO's son had anything to do with the inspiration behind this product but it's consoling (sorry about the pun) to know that there are people all around us supporting families with disabilities.

Taking careful consideration and building products for the disabled have actually brought positive changes and interfaces for those who are not disabled as well. There are able-bodied people today but chances are, we're all going to need help as we get older.

Anyway I can connect this to my electric drum kit so I can play Rockland 3 on my Xbox? I'm assuming I would just need a bunch of 1/4" to 1/8" adaptors.
