The danger to going with this deal is AMD comes out with the X3D chip(s) during CES and obliterates all competition again just like the 5800X3D did when it released. The problem with that is the AM5 motherboards are expensive right now. I'm on a 7700K box and I'm also contemplating on just picking up a cheap AM4 mobo and cpu but would be dead end (but still cheap). I would personally rather do that than pick up a 13900K which is also a dead platform. Those benchmarks beat AMD only when you go with DDR5 ram so if you're going to fork over that much money, you might as well do it on an AM5 motherboard so you can upgrade to a 8000 or 9000 series Ryzen in a few years with the same motherboard.


TLDR:
go AM4 if you want to upgrade cheap (CPU prices have never been cheaper)
go Intel 13XXX if you want something faster than AM5 in productivity and 1080p gaming.

go AM5 if you want flexibility to upgrade to a 2024 or 2025 processor.

You can still use an old Z690 board for it, it just has to support being able to flash to a newer BIOS without a cpu installed

If I was planning to build fresh with 13600k for $299, is it worth it to move up to this now even though I don't need all that compute power? 1440p gaming mostly. But maybe pricing gets to the point where it still just makes sense to be a little frivolous?

Almost no one ever upgrades in the same socket. If you've stuck with your Haswell chip for so long, by the time you need to upgrade again, you'll probably just need to upgrade your entire rig again. Also take whatever AMD says with a heavy grain of salt because they tried to screw early Zen adopters out of Zen 3 but backpedaled after the backlash.

No I think you be fine with the 13600k. I actually would wait and maybe you get like a 250 buck deal around BF. But take that with a grain of salt.

No. You will be GPU bound at 1440p and higher with anything more than a 9900k under current gen games.

Why would you go gen 12 when gen 13 is available for not much more and provides considerably better performance for the price difference? This argument maybe makes sense mid gen where you are balancing waiting for next gen chips vs currently available.

Kinda agree. 12th gen = 13th gen is meh difference lol. But 11th gen going to 12th gen is a good upgrade. I think it's because apples m1 chip put 11th gen to shame so they had to up the anty.

nope, not in the slightest... i went from a 9700k to a 12700k and saw almost no differences in FPS at 3440x1440 with my Red Devil 6900XT, spend money on a better GPU. if you don't specifically need the 13600K for something and you can still get the 12700K with free mobo, i'd do that and throw that extra cash at a GPU too.
one caveat is games that are coded horribly, like 7 Days to Die... i went from 100fps to 144fps (monitor cap).

obviously my CPU benchmarks almost doubled... but that's really only fun if you got friends to compare against LMAO

This chip runs hot, will peg 240/280 AIO at 99C at out of box power level settings. Don't go anything lower than big air like NH-D15 or decent AIO unless you want to knee cap the chip at 175 watts or less PL settings in bios which do impact performance.

Worth it. I was going to build a 12700k but ended up with a 13700k and MSI MPG Edge Wifi DDR4 motherboard. I don't have any complaints.

Just make sure when you go with the DDR4 memory you upgrade the BIOS of the motherboard.
