The danger to going with this deal is AMD comes out with the X3D chip(s) during CES and obliterates all competition again just like the 5800X3D did when it released. The problem with that is the AM5 motherboards are expensive right now. I'm on a 7700K box and I'm also contemplating on just picking up a cheap AM4 mobo and cpu but would be dead end (but still cheap). I would personally rather do that than pick up a 13900K which is also a dead platform. Those benchmarks beat AMD only when you go with DDR5 ram so if you're going to fork over that much money, you might as well do it on an AM5 motherboard so you can upgrade to a 8000 or 9000 series Ryzen in a few years with the same motherboard.


TLDR:
go AM4 if you want to upgrade cheap (CPU prices have never been cheaper)
go Intel 13XXX if you want something faster than AM5 in productivity and 1080p gaming.

go AM5 if you want flexibility to upgrade to a 2024 or 2025 processor.

You can still use an old Z690 board for it, it just has to support being able to flash to a newer BIOS without a cpu installed

100 percent agree. Bought a 12900ks off this guy who had swapped it for a 13900k. Asked him if he noticed a difference and he said it was an impulse buy.

Lol, all the better for those in the used market. Got this 12900ks, z690 maximus hero, and 32gb of Dominator 6600 cl 32 ram for $530. The money saved was enough to justify getting a 4090.

You could have just upgraded the 1080ti to a 3080 and the gain would have been pretty similar; didn't need to upgrade the CPU.

I easily solved my 4770k with gtx 1080 still working just fine problem by buying a 32" 4K monitor. That immediately killed this combo as they can't even do 4k gaming.

I actually did, got a 3080 first. With the 6700k/3080, I was playing god of war high setting 1440p. The 6700k pegged at 90%+ almost all the time and my frame varies between 90-110. Upgraded to 7700x and my frame stay between 110-120, with rare occasion that I see 100-110. In stand still scene, the 6700k/3080 usually match the 7700x/3080, but the minimum fps suffers once actions involved. Its not the most scientific method of measuring but in my experience that I did saw noticeable minimum fps gain with the cpu upgrade and I am happy with it. Sure 90 fps is still very playable. But the system is quite old already with 8gb 2133 ddr4, it has served me well for the past 6 years, I decided its time for an upgrade.

and it was live, for over a week... lets not act like it was a flash sale. anybody looking to upgrade, myself included, could tell that the 12700K deal was going to far surpass anything they'd put together for a 13700K deal at this point.

dunno if you did any incremental testing, i always do, more people nerds like data points nod

i went from a 9700K/2070AMP Extreme to a 12700K/Red Devil 6900XT, ran with the 9700K/6900XT and swapped to the 12700K/6900XT to see increases. 3DMark GPU score just swapping the 6900XT went from 9,600 to 20,000 and FPS in a few games i tested doubled at 3440x1440. 3DMark CPU score swapping the 12700K went from 7,100 to 13,410 and testing the same few games, so little to no difference other than 7 Days to Die which jumped another 25-50% (capping my monitor at 144fps, outside of the cities of course) from the 9700K/6900XT setup.
again, all my game testing is at 3440x1440, which the 2070 was really hurting with when i picked up this new monitor... it was doing ok enough at 2560x1440 though.
