The lowest I'd seen it previously was $139 but I could be mistaken.

Pretty easy. I just did it tonight. Took a few minutes.

I ran several speed tests. This thing is fast and has good range. Covers my previous dead spots at high speeds.

Netgear Routers, even top of the line DONOT support Vpn on router level, which is surprising as most other brands do. So in future if you want to have a vpn you will be sol.

I could be wrong but I couldn't find any differences in the specs between the two models.

However the Costco version (RAX54S) comes with a free 1-year subscription to Netgear's Armor security software, whereas I believe the RAX50 comes with a 30-day trial.

I'm using one of latest netgear modem+ router. Nighthawk app really slow. It does not have all features, some of them are subscribe basis. Just check before buy

I'm now thinking of returning to Costco and buy nest wifi pro model considering different features without any monthly subscription

The app sucks. Log in through the browser and you'll get a ton of options to customize. They make the app way too basic IMO. I think the website is https://router login.net (no spaces)

Thanks for the heads up. Any suggestions on brands/models similar to this router that do support VPN?

Asus Routers are a good way to go. You can also go with pfsense, but requires alot of time and effort to setup.
