Don't confuse Metabo HPT (formerly Hitachi) with the original German Metabo. One is decent homeowner grade, the other is professional grade.

This is better. The only HF grinders cheaper than this one have fewer amps, 90 day warranty and no hard case or wheels.

I have 3 of these, pick one up each time I see them down to $29. These are really nice grinders, I've had no issues with them.
No brainer at this price. I'm in for another. I don't like stopping while I'm working on welding projects so I don't switch them out anymore… I leave one with a flap disk, one with a grinding wheel and one with a cut off wheel. They all hand under my welding table- ready to use. Going to leave a wire wheel on this new one.
The difference it makes while working is definitely worth $30, it's so nice to grab what you need and keep working.

Metabo is generally good, not quite what they used to be though from what I've seen, but this is the bare bones-est of angle grinders, low amps, thumb switch single speed etc. If you're going to use this half past never I'd save your bucks and pay the same price for a slightly lower quality but possibly better features throw away grinder at harbor freight when you actually need it.

I've had this unit for a few years and it's been a workhorse for the metal work I do. For me it's performed quite a bit better than the old HF version it replaced. For this price I might buy a back up. Heck for $29 this might make a cheap and decent Christmas present for my son or dad as well. Peace

I bought one on the last sale, it isn't horrible, and for $29 I am satisfied. I use it for junk that I don't want to use my milwaukee on, or my bosch variable speed for. I look at it like it is, a disposable tool Suprisngly the grininding wheels were not complete rubbish.

I really like my grinders to have a paddle switch for safety purposes. Just a personal thing, I am not saying everyone needs to or has to use one. I am not the government.

The beat part about this is the case it comes with. I keep my Harbor Freight one in the cardboard box but wish it had a case.

I have this grinder and I am quite satisfied. I use it about once a week and it works fine. I had a Harbor Freight unit that was cheaper but it died a sparky death that kind of scared me. It was about 2 years old. The Metabo feels much more solid and heavy duty to me.

Bought one last year for the same price. At this price I am contemplating getting another one to save me the time changing disks when cutting and grinding, stripping and polishing.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I keep my harbor freight one in an old tool box which works ..but would be nice to have a plastic case. Even tools from the big boys come in bags these days.

This is Metabo HPT, which used to be Hitachi Power Tools (Chinese), not Metabo (German). A private equity firm bought them both and confusingly conflated the names.

This model goes on sale a few times a year at this price. It's a very good "budget pick". Comparable to the Bosch 1375A, which is a bit smoother, but doesn't go on sale nearly as often. Also the Metabo HPT comes with a case and 5 discs; value at around $10, so you're effectively getting the grinder for closer to $20. Can't really complain about that. It's not suitable for heavy use, but the occasional DIY'er should be served well with this.

I've had an older Hitachi-branded version of this for about 5 years. I use it a few times per year; primarily to sharpen mower blades, a splitting maul and axe, and lawn aerator tines with a 60-grit flap disc. I've also used cutting discs to cut through some pretty thick metal; most recently a rusted on hitch ball. Instructions say to not use for cutting, but I've had no issues with using a type 27 4.5" cutting wheel. It's just a liability thing. Grinders without the guard that completely covers the disc always say "not for cut off wheels".

Hitachi Power Tools is technically a Japanese company I believe? The tools may very well be made in China, but the company is in Japan.

Except Hitachi Power Tools no longer exists. The Japanese parent Hitachi Global sold it, but not the name, to KKR, a global private equity firm, who renamed it to Metabo HPT. KKR also owns the original Metabo, but the two companies are run independently with nothing shared between them.

Edit: As AffanR correctly stated below, it is Koki that owns both Metabo and Metabo HPT. Koki is owned by KKR.
