It's not a super deal but when it's still a deal when redeeming for Amazon GC. Unlike Chase or Citi who actually charge you MORE for Amazon GC.

looks like you get an additional 5% when you redeem your discover rewards for either amazon or walmart.

I agree. Right now anyone with a Discover card can get 5% off on Amazon with Discover's 5% quarterly cashback bonus. I haven't tested it, but that should include 5% off on an Amazon gift card.

isn't the deal here using cashback that you earned 5% on, to get another 5% off?

i.e. if i spent $100, earned $5. used $4.75 (5% off) for another $5 value..oh i see but then you wouldn't get the 5% off on the next purchase because you used a gift card.

well, still some value there after this quarter, for those who don't already have a prime card or other/better methods (amex blue cash preferred) for amazon year-round.

This is the 5% quarter for Amazon. I think you're better off using your points in other ways where you get a larger discount. Even if you're not sure whether you'll be able to use them elsewhere later and therefore value each dollar of cashback at $1, you're just as well off using your Discover card for the purchase and then applying the points to your bill.

This isn't a good deal.

Bad deal. You can order as many physical or virtual Amazon gift cards on Amazon and pay with Discover and get the 5% bonus category rebate on up to $1500 for the calendar quarter. No reason to waste accumulated Discover bonus when you can find better discounted gift card deals throughout the year.

Since we're here and discussing already... I'm curious what other SlickDealer's find is the best value for Discover $$ rewards - I typically buy Staples gift cards at a discount and add it to my Staples Rewards $$'s, then desperately try to find deals at Staples (they have decent deals about once every 2 months these days, I sure do miss circa 5+ years ago when I could regularly stack coupons + rewards + gift cards I bought with Discover $$'s).
