Preemptive Ethernet cable CAT rating guide:

CAT5 is old, outdated, and should be avoided.
CAT5e is now certified for 2.5Gbit and and the minimum you should bother with in 2022.
CAT6 does 10Gbit to 100ft and 5Gbit to 300ft.
CAT6e is not a real standard, it's just marketing fluff.
CAT6A is a real thing and supports 10Gbit to 300ft.
CAT7 (and CAT7A) is an ISO standard but not recognized by the TIA.
CAT8 supports up to 40Gbit, but is irrelevant for home use. The 2.5Gbit and 5Gbit standards were created since 10Gbit is still rare in the home market.

TLDR CAT5e is fine for most things unless its for 5Gbit or more in which case CAT6A is sufficient for 10Gbit. If you need something beyond CAT6A you probably work in IT in an enterprise setting.

Flat vs round has already been touched on, but don't assume flat = bad quality. Monoprice tends to make pretty solid cables.

I recommend against flat cables, especially of that length. I've had packet drops and negotiation issues with flat cables in the past.

I couldn't help but notice the 30awg spec.

This cable does not meet ANSI TIA/EIA 568. The new minimum for patch cables is 28awg. The old standard was 24-26awg for patch and 22-24awg for runs.

I own two of these exact cables in 50' length. Been in use for almost a year now in a very complicated setup. Not a single hiccup out of either one. In fact, these cables ruined me for round (normal) cables. These go around corners and up walls so much easier and don't stick out as much (while trying to turn a corner with a round one, you have to choose between tightly turning the corner and possibly damaging the cable or turning a corner softer with the cable sticking way out and looking ugly/getting snagged). These offer the best of both worlds. I own about 150 ethernet cords, many still sealed in wrappers, but I'm buying more of these because I only have two of these flat ones, and they're far superior to standard CAT5e cables IMO.

Buy without hesitation.

To the user I quoted: If you had issues with these cables, they have a lifetime warranty and I suggest getting replacements. If you are talking about other flat cables (not Monoprice), then it's quite irrelevant...

For those who interested to learn about pros and cons of flat ethernet cables, compared to round cables, I recommend to read the following article:

As a side note, the following line in the item description seems to be wrong. There is no way that standard cat5e cable can support 10Gpbs.

Data Transfer Rate ‎10.2 Gigabits Per Second

Ran two 75' flat cables like this a few months ago in new house. No issues here in terms of connection performance. I probably wouldn't do flat again just because of how it likes to twist up while running it but that was the only issue. Got it because it was cheaper. Being unshielded apparently isn't a big deal in a typical home install either.

Agree with this complete! It's silly to go cheap, when cat 6 is only 2 or 3 bucks more..

Cat 5 cables are still useful and will be fine for web browsing and light gaming. Will perform the same or better than a lot of wireless systems people have in their homes. Old tech is still useful and monoprice does sell quality cables.

I changed over to Cat 6 on the cheap. Looks like I should have Cat 6a oh well. I don't need Cat 6a but why not if it's not much more.

This is a horrible deal. This is not a great CAT5e.

Cat5e cables usually run between 24 and 26 AWG, while Cat6, and Cat6A usually run between 22 and 26 AWG.

Remember, smaller number, thicker copper. The deal is extremely cheap and will more that likely give you intermittent issues at full Gbit speeds. didn't realize cables were made at 30awg until now.

Hope this helps.

Lost me at flat. The pairs are twisted for a reason.
