You're better off with the Ryzen 5000 series.

Wasn't the Ryzen 4000 series exclusive to laptops?

It was laptop chips for a while. Then some desktop oem exclusives. But last April they announced they were releasing some budget chips to compete with i3s. Kind of dumb naming to use the 4000 series naming because that makes them seem older than they are. But they do use the older zen 2 architecture

Thanks for posting this OP Smilie .. I'm not sure if buying the bundle makes you not qualify for this but I think you might get a free uncharted game coupon code to redeem on steam , keep an eye out for any such message from amazon after your purchase .. I can verify that when I purchased the amd 5 series ryzen 5600x that I received about a week (maybe two weeks? trying to remember Stick Out Tongue ) later an email but the email did stipulate that you need to create and log onto an amd account and it's software checks your PC to see if the cpu you bought is actually installed into your PC (which shouldn't be a problem for most people but thought I would point it out if you're thinking " Oh cool I can gift the Uncharted game to a friend " .. I don't think it's that easy Smilie )

One other thing to bear in mind .. and maybe wiser heads can weigh on this than me.. as I found out the hard way some motherboards simply do not support the amd ryzen 5 CPU's right out of the box .. what's worse , unless the motherboard has say usb easy flash bios to let you get around this, without a older (say ryzen 3 series processor ) to plug in there such that you can update the bios you're stuck.. it is possible for amd to send you a loaner processor in this situation

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100

but they will require correspondence from the motherboard manufacturer saying " Hey we can't help if your CPU isn't supported sorry" .. which I imagine shouldn't be too difficult if you just tell the rep you're chatting with online what you need and ask them to send you an email transcript of the conversation.. once you have that amd will require a picture of the cpu itself (which was really hard for me since that processor is so shiny it's hard to get a good picture of the serial number on it even with the flash on my cell phone camera turned off ) and the cpu invoice ... they mail you the loaner cpu and thermal paste for free to get the MB up and running , you have 10 business days from when you receive it to mail it back to amd and they pay for the return shipping..

So I would also snag a tube of say arctic mx4 thermal paste so you can reapply, clean off and then reapply thermal paste as necessary.

You might look at the amazon reviews like I did and say " Oh a bunch of people didn't have any problems with the ryzen 5 processor so I'll try my luck" and you can feel free to do so .. all I can tell you is my experience absolutely sucked Frown .. was forced to mail my MB back to amazon (though they at least were very good about giving me a quick refund, often they make you wait the full 14 days or longer AND contact them a few times to get that refund for electronics) and ended up ordering a MB with usb easy flash bios which I am still waiting for in the mail.. hopefully that will solve the problem and I can actually use the 5600x CPU I purchased Stick Out Tongue

also worth noting if you do go for a board with usb easy bios flash you should have a usb 2.0 (strangely enough not usb 3.0) thumb drive no bigger than 32 GB formatted with FAT32 .for best results.. instructions on how to do it vary from MB to MB model and are detailed in the MB's instruction manual

No.

In US, it was for OEM only.

But in other markets, like China, Taiwan and few others,
an avg Joe can just walk into a store and buy one.

Meh... Can pick up a 5500 for $100 and a A520 for $50 or shop around for a $60 B450.

Edit: Boards have gone up a bit in price(+$10), but this is a really mediocre processor...

If you're near a Micro Center, you can build a comparable combo +leveraging their $20 motherboard discount) for about $115.

Good luck!

Perhaps not a good deal, but it is a right move that Micro Center now sells via Amazon, giving many people who doesn't have MC nearby access to their better deal in the future.

any other cheap boards like that Prime B450M-A II that have BIOS flashback though? Yea seems like you can just buy the two parts separately and it costs the same as the bundle. It seems like it would be good for a cheap Plex build just throw in a cheap 5450 or 6450 for video output.

Yes and no. So ryzen 4000 with the "U" at the end is a mobile processor. This past year they came out with a couple of low end ryzen CPUs hence this model, it's full AM4 socket. It has nothing in common with the 4000 series U mobile chips

This ryzen 5500 with motherboard combo for 175$ makes the most sense out of all of them imo. The next tier up is 215$ for the 5600

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...48cc8&th=1

Spend 15$ more for much better performance. Although the 5600 is better still, if your really pinching pennys this is the way to go.

If I'm gonna go ryzen, I'm gonna get a nice B550 or X570 board, 5600x or 5800x and motherboard combo will cost at least 400$. So that's the reality. So to get something close to that for half of that, your not getting half the performance of a 5800x and ASUS tuff gaming motherboard for example for half the price. But if you want those extra features and extra speed you gotta pay to play
