Been waiting for a big ass TV to go on sale, for Xmas for my pa-in-law, and the time has finally come.

Seems like a much better deal than the TU7000 from Walmart or Best Buy. Same price but with a 5y warranty (instead of 1), a very slightly bigger screen, better viewing angles (IPS panel), 120hz, 4 HDMI ports (instead of 2), HDMI 2.1.

The sale for this was originally slated for the 14th at $1100, according to their Black Friday catalog. I guess they decided to let it go live early & reduced the price!

Edit: I am a little confused why their thumbnail says 2 HDMI when it has 4. I looked up the manuals online on LG's website though and it says 4 in total, 2 x 2.0 & 2 x 2.1.

Edit2: Apparently IPS, 120hz, VRR, & 2 extra HDMI ports (2.1) are unique to the 86" model. Anything smaller is a VA panel, has 2 HDMI ports, only 2.0, no VRR, & 60hz.

Edit3: My pa-in-law mounted it in his living room & has been using it for a few days and is absolutely in love with it. Merry early Christmas, Dale

This one or an 85 qled/full array (about twice the price) for a dark room? I will use it mainly for watching movies.

Edit: Never mind....

From rting
"The LG UQ80 is okay for most uses. It's good for use in rooms with a few lights around while watching TV shows or using it as a PC monitor as it has decent reflection handling, but it doesn't get bright enough to fight a ton of glare. It's also decent for watching sports thanks to its wide viewing angle, but its motion handling isn't special, as there's image duplication. Unfortunately, it's mediocre for watching movies in dark rooms as blacks look gray, and the TV lacks a local dimming feature to further improve the contrast."

It's 86' for $1k. Tough to complain.

The expired Samsung 82'' OLED deal was definitely a better deal, I would wait for something similar. 4'' smaller but better overall quality and ratings.

Thought about this, but I may get the 85" Samsung UN85TU7000 instead, also on sale at Best Buy for $1,000 right now. VA panel with better contrast, deeper blacks, tizen vs lg's WebOS. I don't game so 120hz makes no difference for me. The Samsung also has a bit worse viewing angle, but that doesn't matter for me.

Lot of misinformation about Viewing Angles on here….to clarify, this IPS panel has excellent Viewing Angles. Where this is important, is if your room is shaped like a shoebox and the TV is in the center of the long wall with seating on either side. If this is your setup, Viewing angle is definitely something you should be paying attention to.

QD-OLED > OLED > IPS > VA

I would mostly game and movie/show watch. Sports sometimes. Seems like a lot of profressional reviews are on the other sizes not the 86" which has the hdmi 2.1 and other perks.

Just purchased instore. Make sure they ring up the warranty. I had to go back to adjust my purchase.

Online tax was cheaper by $7.

When purchasing this kind of physically big item, better to have good warranty. Costco purchase is including this. Bestbuy ones is not

debating between this or optoma projector gt1080hdr. I would lost the 14" of screen space. I already have the 100" screen from 6 years ago. But overall is it better to just go for this overall because its tv vs projector quality and all that comes with that, pros/cons ughhhhhhhh

If you watch TV in the dark (like you should, lol) … OLED or local dimming is absolutely essential for jet blacks. I am allergic to washed out visuals.

I am used to Google TV and I use Roku on another. Does LG have any kind of platform like that?
