I went on a cruise on Carnival Conquest in August 2022 through Costco Travel as our first family cruise (family of 4 with a 13 and 14 year old). We splurged on the Balcony cabin.

No complaints, in general, especially given how cheap the cruise was. Be aware that the Carnival Conquest seems to be one of their older ships. It's clean, but the pool is small and the water slides are a little short. Food is good, and the fees are all inclusive. We hit a storm the first day out, and the ship did sway some. Make sure you bring sea sickness medication if you're not sure if you get sea sick. The onboard store ran out of the medication that day.

Watch out for the additional fees, we purchased the Internet access and the Bubbles package (the soda package). The big fees are the shore excursions. Make sure you research on YouTube on what is worth going to.

All in all, it's a decent, cheap vacation. I think next time we'll go on a more modern ship that has more of everything (bigger pool, more entertainment, etc).

Has anyone booked through Expedia before?

I always book directly with the cruise line because I've heard horror stories about booking through 3rd party websites.
This. If you have any issues, good luck getting a refund or any other monetary resolution. You will be redirected to the 3rd party booking site. This is for hotels/ rentals/ anything bought through 3rd party.

If you leave the ship, it's an "excursion," and it's expensive.
You're also expected to tip based on the full price of the trip, which adds up.
There are free beaches and probably other events. There's no "charge" for leaving the boat. Anything done on shore is just like anything done in the states and
obviously costs money (shopping, bars, attractions, etc).

What is meant by "travel" if not excursions? And if that is what it means, who is correct? Are excursions covered or not?
Ships sell shore excursion packages. They're usually things you can do cheaper on your own....tours, scuba, snorkeling, beaches... They provide transportation and guide. If you're not familiar with territory I'd recommend. Ive found purchasing on boat is usually cheaper. You might also change your mind after you're on boat as to what you want to do on shore or meet some people that you can group with and go on your own

Excursions are shore activities. You can always leave the ship when it goes into port and do activities on your own without being charged, just make sure you return on time. The cruise ships are famous for leaving people behind that don't make it back.

The cruise lines also sell "Shore Excursions" which are planned activities that you can go on. They are an add on cost (a separate charge) with the amount varying depending on what activity you're doing. They have the benefit of having a guide that meets you right outside the ship, and guarantees that you'll make it back to the ship on time.

Are taxes and fees always this high?
Taxes and port fees are basically just pass throughs and they are all the same paid out to the ports and government, they don't change and the cruise line doesn't benefit from them.

That promotion may not be available for the cabin or category you selected.

Seems like very cheap. What's the catch? You have to attend a timeshare conference?
Super cold season. Plus taxes and fees are like USD 130 per person.

Main catches are Covid is still very prevalent on cruises and they're not factoring in extra fees and tips. You can expect about $25 per person per day in tips, usually done as a tipping plan. To be fair, the Carnival Cruise I went on did have excellent service but it was an annoying fee to pay up front before I had ever been on a cruise.

I was about to jump on the MSC cruise on November 17th with my wife, and two oldest kids. We are unvaccinated, and they required a negative Covid test within 3 days of leaving. We called around to see what getting the proper test would cost us. Walgreens was $129 a person. They said we may be able to recoup that from our insurance, but I didn't want to go in the hole $500 before I even got on that cruise, even if the cruise is super cheap.

Oh well, it saved me about $1000 (the cruise total was $800 + I would likely drop a few hundred more on tips and other things).

Carnival is changing their meal system at sit-down main dining hall.

It's not all-you-can-eat anymore. If you order more than 2 things you need to pay.

https://www.cruisehive.com/carniv...ame%20meal

The most startling of these new changes, made beginning on all sailings departing as of Monday, November 7, 2022, is a new $5 (USD) charge added per entrée in the Main Dining Rooms for any entrée past the first two a guest may order at the same meal.

The buffets are still all-you-can-eat, but the quality of food at the main dining hall is higher and you can try new things.
