My kids mom used to use hot cocoa mix. I then introduced her to putting one tbsp cocoa, 2 tbsp sugar to a 12 oz ceramic cup and quickly stirring them together dry. Then add 1 tbsp of water, mix until it's the consistency of cake batter, and then microwave. Microwave time varies (mine is 24 seconds) but you must watch it because if it boils over it is a glorious mess.

Add milk immediately, because if it cools it can start to turn semi-solid. I use ceramic and have never had a mug crack, but I always use my cheap mugs just in case. Stir until mixed, then heat to desired temperature. Do not boil the milk, that creates a hideous mess. Rinse the cup with warm water when finished, as sometimes a little of the mix residue gets overheated and sticks to the bottom. I have never had problems washing it if I rinse it immediately.

This should be called hot sugar mix with 80% added sugar. There should be regulations requiring the primary ingredient in the product name.

Most things that should happen don't happen anymore. Europeans are way ahead of us now in food safety and environmental protection. Tons of stuff are banned there for toxicity that are perfectly legal here. FDA and EPA have become a joke and then defanged by the courts.

I use the same but with fewer steps. 1T quality cocoa and 2T powdered sugar. Whisk into mug of hot water till dissolved. Add a splash of milk and top with a little whipped cream. So good and cheaper than buying the Ghirardelli cocoa I like. I keep meaning to sift it together ahead of time so I don't have to do it every time…

Was going to say. It's sooo easy to make with just cocoa powder, sugar and milk. Just out of curiosity I looked at the ingredient list. No thanks...

You'll note that even Mr. Harley's homemade hot cocoa recipe above has twice as much sugar as cocoa. Additionally, the number of products that would be required to have "water" in the product name would be absurd.
Further it's 60% added sugars, not 80% which also isn't especially egregious compared to the homemade option.

There's a regulation called "truth in advertising". We need a regulation "truth in naming". People should be allowed to eat anything or get their kids addicted to bad food but they should do that with open eyes as opposed to blindfolded into it by big foods like Nestle.

Nothing wrong with calling something water. Water is healthy and good water are sold at a premium price.
