I would love a 7390. Read this first, because it's bad https://www.dell.com/community/La...-p/6099762 -- 42% failure rate, no fix in sight

Darn, I recommended a friend to buy the 7390 laptop. I would not buy it if I read that article

Thank you.

It's a pretty confusing thread. The first few pages are about one problem and then after a brief pause the thread switches over to some other problems unrelated to the initial one. This is where it becomes the most confusing because they talk about multiple problems independently at the same time in the same thread. Some of the problems seemed to be of the one-off variety,

I assume the first issue has been fixed or was a lot of bad boards. If not, there would be none left today as the failure rate was ridiculously high. It happened three months after the initial release. I didn't see it mentioned anymore two months afterward.

I'm not an IT guy but I have bought a few of these off lease 7000 series, including xx90's, The user's are average Joe non business types and they really seem to like them.

If you're looking to buy a Dell refurb, or any Dell for that matter, 5420/30, 5470/80/90 will get the job done for the most part. No heavy gaming though.

Dell and HP enterprise devices are a nightmare
so many compatibility and reliability issues
won't run a myriad of drivers and alternative OS

if all you ever do is what it comes with, Win10 or whatever, it may work for awhile, until it starts slowing down and needs to be restored from recovery partition

Can one return it back for free. I don't really need this, I bought by mistake and I don't see option to cancel the order.

One SODIMM slot only (and no RAM onboard), single-channel, no upgrading unless you toss out the existing SODIMM.

These deals have been around for a couple months in various iterations. Percent off, dollars off or other schema, but they end up around $250 delivered +/-.

For the best value look for either 16 gig ram or 512 gig SSD, 8th gen i5 or i7 and 1080 screen touch screen if you like that

Hard to tell if the thread mentioned in the wiki ever resolved itself. It seems there were some issues regarding batteries/charging/docking and possibly an overactive turbo boost.

At the refurb price one should be looking for a email and surf machine with some light to moderate productivity and entertainment thrown in. 2022 top tier performance from a 4/5 year old processor and $250 is an unreasonable ask and I would expect those who know better aren't looking here for that.

I bought the 7390 i5 8350 a month or so ago and had to have it replaced because the speakers didn't work. While a bit of a PITA, it went smoothly and turn around was about 8 days. I called customer service, left a message with my service tag off the machine and the rest was email that they initiated after my message.

First and second machines both looked new. I disabled turbo boost as a precaution and everything is fine at the moment. I plug the computer in when it needs charging and run it on battery for the most part. Good long battery life for surfing. I would say that I would recommend this for the purposes stated and with the understanding that there have been issues from the past. I think if someone only had $250 to spend and would be stuck with nothing 6 months down the road should there be a failure, there might be safer bets to be made on a new plastic fantastic i3 machine from Acer or Gateway (Walmart deals), but hard to say as these lowest tier entry levels may be more prone to issues with touch pads and keyboards and hinges.

I've bought and sold hundreds of these and have not witnessed this issue at all. As soon as they arrive in our shop (as we do with all refurbs we buy), we unbox, check condition, test all ports, perform any and all updates, flashes, etc. Then they go to a burn in rack where we run them for 72-96 hours using Passmark burn-in as well as another proprietary program. Haven't had a failure yet. Condition have all been "like new". No major cosmetic damage. Latitudes and Precisions are great models as are Elitebook, Probook, and Zbook in HP. Thinkpads in Lenovo. What we see came in our shop for break/fix are 80% consumer models. Most are built poorly in design and please avoid any models from HP that end in WM. Those are throwaways built specifically for Walmart, worst built machines,

It's specifically a 7390 issue, with a certain chip on the mobo burning out. Replacing the mobo works for awhile, then it burns out again. No fix as of 9/2022

This is not just for "best value" but should be your hard requirement - add to that a TPM chip. If you don't have 8th gen or newer (quad core CPU's) and this TPM chip, you will not be able to upgrade to Win11 and get the future-proof OS as "added value." I concur that for sub $300 if you can find 16GB RAM + 512GB SSD + 8th gen or newer CPU with a decent FHD IPS Display, you are killing it.

I run a small side business reselling lightly used laptops in Los Angeles, and this combo sells regularly for $400-550 (depending on manufacturer, build-quality and other features of course).

Just my $0.02 ^.^
