Was weighing whether to get the Pro 8 or 9. I went with the 8, but if I was going to get the 9, this may be the deal to jump on, but I would sell the basic Type Cover for the Signature Cover that holds the pen inside of the keyboard. Having the pen always ready to go is what makes the Surface special - It's like an iPad with a full Windows OS. 16gb of ram is the way to go over 8gb since you can't upgrade that later. The 256GB SSD is small, but it is super easy to upgrade to 1 or 2tb(harder to find) and you would save a lot of money doing it yourself. You don't even have to open the whole PC up to do it. I would also go with the i5 over the i7, in theory to get an extra hour or so of battery life since I just do basic stuff.

I went with the 8 because the 9 didn't offer enough of an upgrade for me, the battery life is rated by Microsoft as being slightly less than the 8, and I would miss the headphone jack that the 8 has. The 9 is reportedly easier to service if you have issues and they have more color options. The 9 just seems like an 8 plus more than a full revision, and the 8 was the one that made the big performance jump over previous models.

I would compare this deal with what you can get from the Microsoft store - You may qualify for a student/teacher/military discount and there are ways to get cash back, using PayPal is one option.

Don't get worked up on the i5 vs i7 difference.
ALL Surface Pros are thermally limited by the weak cooling, so even an i7 won't hit its max without external water cooling.

(Yeah, embarrassing when even a WET NAPKIN improves Surface Pro performance by reducing throttling.)

This deal is also available in store. No need to wait for mailing time. Pro for this deal:
1. $200 OFF newly released product
2. This configuration for I5, 16 gb is only available from Costco and Microsoft. You can't get this from Bestbuy or Amanazon. THere you have to jump to I7 to get 16gb or RAM
3. Extra year of warranty.
4. 90 days return period.

Brief, this is too good to pass up if you were looking in getting the Pro 9. I even will go with this instead of getting a discounted Pro 8.
Please note if you bought in the last 30 days in the store you can price adjustment. Online you can get price adjustment for 90 days.

I wish i7 is on sale too. There is a significant performance difference between i5 vs i7 this year. Basically what you get from this deal compared to last discounted pro8 is only a 16gb ram. Thats huge but this deal doesn't include 250+ value keyboard and pen.

Maybe this is not true for pro9. I haven't searched further but there should be. Bench mark for comparison. i5 on pro9 is basically same as pro8.

Well, sp7 is cheapest.

Sp7+ has the Longest runtime with removable ssd .

Sp8 has the faster screen refresh and improved pen performance.

Sp9 adds the latest 10+ core Alder Lake cpus (older surface pros are 4-core).

So, nothing "ideal".
But the $1k sales pricing at SD posts for both the Alder Lake sp9 and Dell 2-in-1 9315 tablets makes them the "better" choice for most buyers due to the far faster cpus.

Does anyone know if this has active cooling (a fan). My last Surface was terrible on Zoom calls due to overheating.

This year's i5 in this is better than i7 in pro 8 in single core and multi core performance and better energy consumption. At least on benchmarks.
