I went with the 8 because the 9 didn't offer enough of an upgrade for me, the battery life is rated by Microsoft as being slightly less than the 8, and I would miss the headphone jack that the 8 has. The 9 is reportedly easier to service if you have issues and they have more color options. The 9 just seems like an 8 plus more than a full revision, and the 8 was the one that made the big performance jump over previous models.
I would compare this deal with what you can get from the Microsoft store - You may qualify for a student/teacher/military discount and there are ways to get cash back, using PayPal is one option.

Don't get worked up on the i5 vs i7 difference.
ALL Surface Pros are thermally limited by the weak cooling, so even an i7 won't hit its max without external water cooling.
(Yeah, embarrassing when even a WET NAPKIN improves Surface Pro performance by reducing throttling.)

1. $200 OFF newly released product
2. This configuration for I5, 16 gb is only available from Costco and Microsoft. You can't get this from Bestbuy or Amanazon. THere you have to jump to I7 to get 16gb or RAM
3. Extra year of warranty.
4. 90 days return period.
Brief, this is too good to pass up if you were looking in getting the Pro 9. I even will go with this instead of getting a discounted Pro 8.
Please note if you bought in the last 30 days in the store you can price adjustment. Online you can get price adjustment for 90 days.

Sp7+ has the Longest runtime with removable ssd .
Sp8 has the faster screen refresh and improved pen performance.
Sp9 adds the latest 10+ core Alder Lake cpus (older surface pros are 4-core).
So, nothing "ideal".
But the $1k sales pricing at SD posts for both the Alder Lake sp9 and Dell 2-in-1 9315 tablets makes them the "better" choice for most buyers due to the far faster cpus.
