Just some more information from AFTVNews where they show the new Fire Cube is even showing higher performance than the Shield Pro.

There are other things, but that's the only thing I really cared about when I was looking into getting it. Note that I never bought one, so I can't speak from personal experience.

Not going to disagree that performance wise it's slower. But the Shield still has flexibility compared to the Cube. You can install custom apps and run emulators much easier on the shield and games will still run A LOT better. The Cube will work good for the general consumer but the Shield will be for people who know how to tinker with gadgets and add features.
I do think it handles Moonlight and PSPlay well., but I honestly don't see much of a difference in performance with those from the previous gen Fire Cube when using an ethernet adapter that allows 300+ Mbps. But the interface is much better than the FireTV for sure. I do wish they'd upgrade to GoogleTV interface from AndroidTV so that the extra features were there and not JUST the ads.
So until something else comes along, everyone is stuck with it for this one specific use case.
I agree that they should update it, but having had it for almost 2 years now, it still handles everything I throw at it.
If someone was buying something today and doesn't need dolby vision with plex, absolutely find something cheaper for your needs.

Don't believe the ones saying it's just as smooth today as years ago. Pure BS. NOTHING in tech works like that.
Problem is, I just haven't found many alternatives.
The Shield could be better for almost $200. It has many advantages but they often come with flaws. Plex server can't handle ISO files so all my movie backups must be converted. (My old 10 year-old WDTV units have been playing ISOs for the past 10 years). The gaming aspects don't appeal to me, but I know there's a big following for Shield owners. The AI upscaling is great but my modern 4K TV seems to already do a really great job of upscaling (as noted by Rtings). My Samsung TV supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision.
So, I'd be a buyer at maybe $100-$140 of one or more units, but a light discount of the current model that's working its advantages a little too long (for me anyway) just doesn't do it. But many potential buyers might not have the disadvantages that I encounter.
Appreciate the deal post however. It's the time of the year for their traditional Shield light promos.
I have the older Shield and the newer one. I use both on different TVs mostly with Plex and Kodi. I was using Roku for some years, but now prefer the upscaling I get from the Shields. My only complaint is that whenever I fast forward/rewind through content the sound goes out of sync and I need to adjust.

Nvidia has issued at least 3 hotfixes to 9.0, several to 9.01 and now they have issued 9.1. to address the issues.Don't get me wrong, I love my shields but trying to rebuild my Plex libraries after the first upgrade, then downgrade was brutal even when using backups.
Nvidia is usually pretty good about software updates, this sets them apart from the cheaper "Android Boxes" and they continue to support the Shield but I believe they rushed 9.xx out and some folk are still having issues almost a year later. I still am on 8.2.3.
IMHO, this is absolutely the best option for a Plex server but if you do go with a shield, disable your automatic updates and check the Nvidia forums PRIOR to updating you OS
